Red Deer Cervus elaphus
There are six species of wild deer in the British Isles. Chinese Water Deer Muntjac Fallow Deer Roe Deer Red Deer Sika Deer
All About Red Deer The Red Deer is the largest deer in Great Britain. In the Autumn they can be heard roaring.
What do I look like? The summer coat is reddish brown to brown and the winter coat is brown to grey. There are no spots on the adult coat.
What do I look like? The male (boy) is called a Stag. Stags grow huge antlers each year.
What do I look like? The antlers are made of bone. The older the deer the larger the antler.
What do I look like? The antlers drop off in the Spring and grow back by August. When they start growing they are protected by velvet.
What do I look like? A female (girl) Red deer is called a hind. Does a hind have antlers?

What do I look like? Quite often I can be seen in large herds.
What do I look like? A baby red deer is called a calf. Young are born between March and July.
Lifestyle facts. Red Deer are native to the UK. The deer living in lowland areas are larger than those living on high ground as a result of better feeding.
Lifestyle facts. Red deer like herbs, grasses, hedgerow plants, chestnuts and beech mast as well as leaves. They tear down twigs and branches to get at tasty leaves.
Lifestyle facts. Red deer hoof prints or slots are large and a stag s front hoof may measure 8-9 cm in length.
