  1. Update on EUROfusion context: Deliverables for the Magnets final review 2020 Chris Vorpahl, WPMAG RO

  2. Outline WPMAG key dates Definition of set of deliverables (= dossiers ) for both: - WPMAG final review (June 2020) - DEMO gate review (end-Nov 2020) Remark: The dossiers are identical for both IDM structure of the dossiers

  3. 2020 DEMO schedule

  4. 2020 DEMO schedule 27. May: MAG dossiers deadline (approved) 18./19. June: MAG final review End-Nov: DEMO gate review (G1) Chris Vorpahl | DEMO context: Gate deliverables | Magnets meeting Feb 2020 | Page 4

  5. Deliverables for 2020: Gates G1 Conceptual Design 2020 2024 2027 Pre- Concept Selection Concept Validation G1 G2 G3 Conceptual Design P Ph2.1 P Ph2.2 P Ph1 P Ph2 Deliverables Type G1 G2 G3 Review of technical feasibility in PCD phase Down-select to one lead variant (with a possible back up) Technical Management Review of concept design Therefore, we produce two so-called dossiers: Standardized packages for all WPs 1. Design DEFINITION dossier, containing all and only the input documents from WPMAG to be taken into account for the CDA (2021 on). This input is frozen by/after G1 (=requirements), not to be too detailed (!) 2. Design JUSTIFICATION dossier, containing all documents to verify and validate the above Definition

  6. Deliverables for 2020 gate review (G1) - WPMAG 1. IDM placeholders for WPMAG dossiers have been created: 2NKJAG. Highest level view: 72 reports in total 2. Definition, Justification & Project Performance dossiers (= folders) established 3. Inside these folders, all individual deliverables were created (idm v0.0 placeholders) 4. Authors/reviewers/approver are specified

  7. Deliverables for 2020 gate review (G1) - WPMAG 1. IDM placeholders for WPMAG dossiers have been created: 2NKJAG. 2. An overview (excel) of the Dossier contents, agreed with PMU systems engineering (C. Baylard) is here: MAG_FR_and_G1_Dossiers_Definition_table (2P8SF4 v1.2) (current) EXAMPLE: MAG definition dossier (continued below)

  8. Further information WPMAG RO Chris Vorpahl will be on paternity leave 17.2. 16.8.2020 In the absence of a replacement, PMU management has decided the following support for WPMAG: Botond: Support relating to the controlling part (budget, reporting ) Alice and John: Advice for the FP9 preparation John: Support for Final Review preparation Alice and Christophe: Advice for the Gate review preparation Practical consequences Do not add a PMU person in the 2020 TSs as reviewer in IMS and in the 2019 (or earlier) reports that are uploaded to IDM P.S.: Botond.Meszaros@euro-fusion.org; John.Holden@euro-fusion.org; Alice.Beaumont@euro-fusion.org; Christophe.Baylard@euro-fusion.org If you have questions please do not hesitate to ask (ask Botond ) C. 9. Summarizing the main points Gate G1 (2020) review deliverables the dossiers are defined with document titles, main authors and respective deadlines Some gate deliverables are assembled from multiple reports, in these cases, the main author Follows the progress, harmonizes contributions (e.g. wrt level of detail) Assembles the final document Is also the contact for PL/RO for intermediate monitoring purposes For all dossier documents, IDM placeholders & a suitable structure were created The IDM files may be used for document creation (e.g. PL could upload the expected document content/structure as v1.0, the main author could pick up from there ) C. 11. Deliverables for 2020 gate review (G1) - Generic 1. Design DEFINITION dossier: 2. Design JUSTIFICATION dossier Requirements compliance & propagation matrix Relevant analysis & experimental reports Previous design review reports - For justification of choices Architecture definition BOM, PBS, general arrangement drawing 2D schematics - Block & syst. analysis diagrams - PFD, P&ID (Internal ) interfaces definition Analysis database - Inputs & models - Results Sub-systems definition Requirements/specification of sub-systems Drawings & models Contains all documents to verify and validate the Definition (cf. left). It is linked to the Definition it justifies. Contains all and only the input documents from WPMAG to be taken into account for the CDA (i.e. from 2021 on, these become requirements (!). Example: Includes space reservations (= config. models), but not detailed designs, which are contained in the Justification dossier. Reason: Changes after 2020 require a DCR (!) REMARKS: This is a way of standardizing our work into categories enabling a systematic plant-level review Most of the needed documents are produced anyway in WPMAG

  12. Overview of Phases/Gates Construction Alternative representation addressing (design architecture) options All more FPP-relevant tasks were regrouped in PRD Number of design options decreases over time This enables increase of design detail & justification by analysis / prototyping Note: Managing many options consumes effort mostly due to interfaces with other systems: Imagine 2 alternative Blanket coolants (water/He), SN/DN, already yield 4 completely different DEMO architectures Singular-baseline selection is here Note: The DEMO project and Prospective R&D Programme are independent (WPDIV does not count on PRD output), but can benefit mutually (imagine e.g. the He-cooled target would perform extremely well C. 13. Overview of Phases/Gates Construction Engineering Design Conceptual Design 2020 Pre- The engineering design phase is split, introducing a critical gate (G4) at the end of the basic engineering design sub-phase. 2024 Conceptual Design G1 2027 Concept Selection G2 P Ph1 Concept Validation G3 P Ph2.1 G4 Basic Engineering P Ph2.2 G5 Detailed Engineering Basic Engineering (also called Preliminary Design) is a critical phase where all designs are frozen, all integration issues are solved and all interface and requirements frozen. CD1 CD2 The detailed engineering phase corresponds to detailed design and manufacturing design. Conceptual Design Gate (results of PCD Phase are presented and the conceptual design baseline is validated) Selection of one concept for each system G 2 P Ph3.2 The conceptual design phase consists of 2 sub-phases: the selection of one concept/ variant for the various system of DEMO and then the verification and validation of these concepts. P PH3.1 P Ph3 G 1 P Ph2 ED2 PC1 A review of the Preliminary Design Final design gate before entering the procurement and construction phase, corresponding to Manufacturing Readiness Review ED1 G 4 Validation of one concept for each system G 3 G 5 Remark: All these Gs are reviews of the entire DEMO (plant level) Chris Vorpahl | DEMO context: Gate deliverables | Magnets meeting Garching 12-14/02/19 | Page 13
