general
 public are dependent upon engineering
judgments, decisions and practices incorporated into structures,
machines, products, processes and devices.

ASCE CANON 1 GUIDELINES

participating in continuing education courses, reading in the technical literature, and attending
professional meetings and seminars.
B. Engineers should encourage their engineering employees to become registered at the
earliest possible date.
C. Engineers should encourage engineering employees to attend and present papers at
professional and technical society meetings.
D. Engineers shall uphold the principle of mutually satisfying relationships between employers
and employees with respect to terms of employment including professional grade
descriptions, salary ranges, and fringe benefits.

ASCE CANON 7

DEVELOPMENT

III. Professional Obligations
2. Engineers shall at all times strive to serve the public interest.
e. Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their
careers and should keep current in their specialty fields by engaging in

FAIRLY AND ENCOURAGE EQUITABLE PARTICIPATION WITHOUT REGARD TO GENDER OR

ASCE CANON 8

NSPE ALSO PROHIBITS
DISCRIMINATION

NSPE ALSO REQUIRES CONTINUED PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT

III. Professional Obligations
1. Engineers shall be guided in all their relations by the highest standards of
honesty and integrity.
f. Engineers shall treat all persons with dignity, respect, fairness, and
without discrimination.

SUMMARY

The ASCE and NSPE Codes of Ethics are very similar in tone and content.
The ASCE Code has a more simple and logical structure.
By including three concepts in the Fundamental Canons rather than in
portions of the Professional Obligations, the ASCE Code has higher
emphasis on:
pursuing sustainable development
continuing professional development
seeking diversity and avoiding discrimination
