CEPT Workshop on 6G Mobile Communications: Numbering & Network Issues
CEPT Workshop on 6G Mobile Communications, led by Elizabeth Greenberg of Ofcom UK, addresses the role of numbering and networks in the ECC, numbering considerations for 6G, and how WG NaN contributes to the development of numbering for 6G technologies. Key topics include ensuring non-discriminatory access to numbering resources, promoting innovation, and managing numbering plans effectively in the evolving landscape of mobile communications. The workshop aims to facilitate discussions on the future of phone numbers, innovation promotion, and the harmonized use of numbering resources in the 6G era.

How numbering and networks fit into the ECC ECC Mission: to enable the efficient, effective and harmonised use of the radio spectrum, satellite orbits and numbering resources across Europe major assets, critical to providing a wide range of services . and deliver substantial and fundamental benefits to citizens, consumers and businesses continuing pressure on scarce resources as electronic communications are increasingly embedded in our everyday lives and represent a fundamental aspect of society we develop policies and regulatory measures that help administrations to address current key issues and longer-term developments in regulation, technology and use CEPT 6G Workshop 4
Our strategic principle: Ensuring non-discriminatory access to numbering and network resources Effective numbering plan management balances the need to promote competition, foster innovation and ensure consumer protection with the task of administering a scarce resource efficiently. We do this by: recognising that new and innovative electronic communications services and applications, by both traditional operators and by new entrants, are likely to require numbering resources developing harmonised policies that will continue to promote non-discriminatory and technology neutral access to numbering resources and facilitate the continued evolution to the high capacity networks of the future CEPT 6G Workshop 5
Numbering considerations for 6G There remains a role for phone numbers well into the next decade and likely beyond Changes in technology could revolutionise how phone numbers are used. Despite the growth of other forms of identifiers, phone numbers will remain a key means by which called and calling parties are identified, and access to services is provided The use of numbers will continue to evolve, playing more of part in authentication, verification and call routing behind the scenes Trust, consumer confidence and protection vitally important How can numbering promote innovation and support 6G? Does 6G need any differentiation through new number ranges? Any changes required to number assignment eligibility criteria or regulatory rules? Forecasting demand extremely difficult any insights very welcome! Remember: spectrum and numbering regulation needs to work together as innovation in one can impact the other CEPT 6G Workshop 6
WG NaN and numbering for 6G We develop policies in numbering and networks and advise on technical regulatory matters to promote and support telecom innovation and competition Ready to study and provide relevant deliverables to support numbering for 6G Welcome industry collaboration through focus sessions and project team meetings Please make contact if you would like to further develop the discussions on numbering for 6G Thank you!
