Background ASSIST is a peer led smoking prevention programme Encourages young people not to take up smoking by having informal conversations with their friends It has been evaluated by a randomised controlled trial funded by the Medical Research Council No other schools-based smoking prevention programme has been found to be as effective If implemented throughout the UK, it is estimated that the ASSIST programme would prevent 20,000 young people taking up smoking each year.

Facts Each year in Nottinghamshire an estimated 2,500 young people start smoking Most adult smokers take up the habit in teenage years Smoking causes nearly 20% of deaths in England Children who start smoking before the age of 16 are twice as likely to continue as adults Treating smoking related illnesses costs the National Health Service in Nottinghamshire around 30.2 million every year 86% of 12 to 17 year olds who smoke prefer the 3 most heavily advertised brands
