CITATION SANDWICHES
Our next set of practices include supporting and counter-
claiming quotes. Keep each practice organized on your own
sheet of paper. Yes, I will collect it.

APA Practices #1 In support
This week we will learn how to use direct quotes for supporting an argument
and to counterclaim an argument. Copy and finish below onto your own sheet
of paper.

One key aspect of social media is the immediate
connection to others.
Jessi Hempel (2013)
asserts
 that social media
allows her to “rely on my friends’ decisions to
make better judgments about everything from
where to stay to what’s on my playlist” (p. 2).
The ability to connect immediately with friends
to get their input allows one to make wise,
informed decisions in a quicker time than what it
would take alone.
APA Practice #2-use the quote to argue
against a point (counterclaim)

One key flaw of social media is the immediate
connection to others.
Jessi Hempel (2013)
speculates
 that social media
allows her to “rely on my friends’ decisions to
make better judgments about everything from
where to stay to what’s on my playlist” (p. 2).
In contrary
, relying on others is creating a
weakness in our society in which many do not
take the time to truly think through their own
decisions but instead let their friends make
decisions for them.
APA Practice #3-Sandwich the quote
“Bleeeergh. My child no sleep, so me speak
Zombie today…and sing that song, ‘Lately, I’ve
been, I’ve been losing sleep’” (Mrs. E)
APA Practice #4-
Use the following quote in
support
 of your own
claim.
[Claim]
J. Hempel (2013) writes that her “social sites
have become personal 24/7 tabloids, always at
the ready via [her] phone to absorb her
attention with food photographs and pictures of
babies with big bows on their heads” (p. 2).
[write support here]
APA #5
Use the quote from yesterday to write
an argument against
Claim
J. Hempel (2013) _______ that her “social
sites have become personal 24/7 tabloids,
always at the ready via [her] phone to absorb
her attention with food photographs and
pictures of babies with big bows on their
heads” (p. 2).
[write counterclaim here]
APA #6-Your turn!
CLAIM
J. Hempel (2013) states that “my month-long
social media diet allowed me to catalogue my
own bad habits…I’ve leaned on social media
to remove myself from social situations I find
uncomfortable” (p. 2).
Expand on claim
TURN IN!!!

Passive vs. Active Voice-Rewrite each
sentence into active voice.
1.
A suggestion was made by Mrs. Eilertsen to
have eaten donuts prior to attending class.
2.
The students’ argument that donuts are
unhealthy will be considered by Mrs.
Eilertsen prior to giving the test.
3.
I have been wanting to go see the new LEGO
movie.
***look for
to be
verbs (is, was, were, has/have
been etc.)
APA Practice #2
1.
The LEGO movie is going to be watched by us
tonight.
2.
My flat tire I discovered after serving Jury
Duty was changed by a guy who drove a Ford
Focus.
3.
Nathan and I have been up since 3 a.m.; yay
for babies!
APA #3
Identify as active or passive:

get a donut.
2. Even though I have not started my research
proposal, I know what I am going to write about
so I’m going to tell my teacher that it will get
done on time.
3. I really despise the 1997 version of
Romeo and
Juliet
.
4. Please can we be done practicing passive
voice?
APA #4

2. Bobbie was given a D on his Research
Proposal (poor Bobbie-he didn’t follow
directions).

writing?
APA #5
Write your thoughts on the following topic
Why should or should not Administration cancel
school for students not testing on AIMS days?
Now check it for passive voice-circle any you
find. Turn it in! (It’s not bad if you find some).
APA #2 3/25

article in proper APA format. (in text citation)
Example:
P. George & G. Wagner (2013) state in their article
that “almost 60 percent of 22-24 year olds are
living at home” (p. 1).

would use it in support or disagreement of
your research.
TURN IN!
APA #1 3/31

announce publicly” (Shelley, 1818, p. 63).
APA #3

you to go and type your Research paper? List a
question about the final research paper.

APA #4: interview a peer. Would they rather:
Slip your bare feet into a very moist pair of old
bowling shoes-
OR
-walk barefoot in a gas
station bathroom?
Cite what they say in an in-text citation using
personal communication format.
EX: (Name-if not already stated in sentence,

APA #5
