The late 1880s and 1890s saw the United States embroiled in near-wars and diplomatic crises due to American expansionism. This included the annexation of Hawaii despite Queen Liliuokalani's opposition, and the debate over acquiring the Philippines for economic interests. Anti-imperialists argued against the Philippine acquisition, questioning the legitimacy of taking the islands from Spain. The political landscape shifted with the presidency changes from Harrison to Cleveland, reflecting conflicting views on imperialism.
