Meet Mrs. Sears Family I have two children, a 14 year old boy, and 11 year old girl. Hobbies Reading, traveling, walking Teaching Experience 23 years, (16 years in Kyrene, and 7 at Basha Elementary) ASU for Early Childhood, NAU for Masters in Elementary Education, Ottowa University for Reading Specialist endorsement.

Regular Communications Homework folders come home Mon.-Thurs. Weekly Sears Class Updates are on the webpage and will be updated Fridays Students will take home all graded and finished work on Fridays. E-mail is best way to contact me. Office updates will be sent weekly. Basha Bobcat app is coming soon!
Volunteers are Awesome! PTO Meetings The PTO would love to have at least 2 parents attend from each classroom. Any volunteers?
Fund Raising Information PTO Check-a-thon will be starting on Monday. We truly appreciate your generous donations! Tax Credit donation information can now be found on the CUSD website, www2.chandler.k12.az.us. Your donation will help fund our field trips! We are planning a trip to Kartchner Caverns on during the 1stweek of the 2ndquarter. We need tax credit donations to do this!
Snack Time Snack time is at 10:10 AM. -Good snacks to bring include: Fruit, crackers, granola bars, dry cereal. No chips, cookies, or candy. NO Peanuts or tree nuts please!
What about homework? Parents are required to review and sign reading homework each day, Mon.-Thurs. in your child s homework folder. Homework comes home every Friday. Homework is due the following Friday.
How to Help at Home Establish a basic routine Kid s thrive on it! Morning schedule/after school plan/night time ritual Don t forget to read and talk with your child. 8 and 9 year olds need 10-12 hours of sleep each night! How much sleep is your child getting?
Grading Policies Grades are recorded weekly in Infinite Campus. All progress reports and report cards will be available on line this year. Stay informed! Check your child s grades at regular intervals. I often grade using ratios: 7/10 means 7 correct out of 10 possible. Here are other possible scores you may see: Excellent: Above average: Average: Below Average: Failing: A , 90-100% +, 4 B, 80-89%, +, 3.5 C, 70-79%, , 2. 5 or 3 D, 60-69%, -, 2 F, below 60%, -, 0 or 1

Poor Choices May Require Disciplinary Action Late homework or unsigned homework no recess, or Study Hall, instead of PACK Club. For behavioral disruptions, the following steps will occur: 1. Warning or Fine 2. Note to parents via email or homework folder 3. Time-out for a short time in another classroom
Reading Highlights The Journeys Reading Series by Harcourt Content Area Literacy in Social Studies and Science will be incorporated into reading units! Increased use of non-fiction texts, literature studies, and author studies
Writing with Style Writing about what you read has increased with the national standards. Neat printing, using correct letter formation is necessary in order to master cursive this year! Basic Conventions: Capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence/paragraph structure. Exploring the 6 + 1 Writing Traits: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, Presentation. Focus on comparing/contrasting essays, and opinion essays using evidence Writing as a process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing
Making Sense of Math Go Math 1stQuarter: Number Sense! Place Value to the 100,000s Adding and Subtracting with regrouping Multiplying Estimation!
Scientific Discoveries All units will reinforce scientific inquiry and the scientific method. Our Quarterly Science Units are: Earth Science Rocks and Minerals Physical Science: light and sound Life Science ecology, ecosystems and plant/animal life Health and nutrition
Social Studies 1stQuarter US Citizenship, Ancient Greeks and Romans, European Explorers 2ndQuarter U.S. Government, Early American/Native American History 3rdQuarter American History through the Civil War. Famous American research. 4thQuarter geography and map skills
ThinkCentral ThinkCentral is a great website that is tied to our Journeys and Go Math textbooks. Multiple resources are available for both students and parents. We are planning to use ThinkCentral for homework in the future.
