Accessibility Standards Canada 2022 Annual Public Meeting Board Presentation
Accessibility Standards Canada, established in 2019 under the Accessible Canada Act, aims to create a barrier-free Canada by 2040. They develop and review accessibility standards for federal organizations, support research on barrier identification and removal, and are led by a Board of Directors mostly composed of individuals with disabilities. Their roadmap to 2040 focuses on developing top standards and positioning the organization as a leader. Achievements include accreditation from the Standards Council of Canada and increased public engagement.

Accessibility Standards Canada 2022 Annual Public Meeting Board Presentation
Mandate Accessibility Standards Canada was created in 2019 under the Accessible Canada Act (the Act). Our mandate is to contribute to a Canada without barriers by January 1, 2040 Develop and review accessibility standards for organizations under federal jurisdiction Support research on the: Identification removal, and prevention of barriers. Share best practices about the removal of barriers.
Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer The 9 Board members are part-time Governor in Council appointees. Accessibility Standards Canada is the first federal organization that is mostly led by people with disabilities. The Board of Directors: sets the strategic priorities of the organization; oversees its activities; and advises the Chief Executive Officer on issues related to the mandate. The CEO, the deputy head, manages the daily operations.
Vision Our Board of Directors decides on priorities for standards and research. Our vision is that: Everyone, including people with disabilities, can: 1. expect a Canada without barriers; and 2. be sure that opportunities and services are fully accessible. Nothing without us guides our mandate.
Roadmap to 2040 Accessibility Standards Canada s Roadmap to 2040 has two work streams: 1. Develop the best standards; and 2. Position Accessibility Standards Canada as a: strong leader partner, and influencer. Key date in our Roadmap to 2040 is January 1, 2033: This is when initial standards will have been developed. People with disabilities and other experts have been involved in the process.
