The feedback from the 2021 annual review meeting by SAG Eva Weltzien highlights progress achieved by the ABBB team despite COVID-19 challenges. Key achievements include capacity building efforts, integration of NARO Food Science Team, development of product profiles, and use of Btract and Musabase for data operations. Suggestions for improvement focus on enhancing linkage between projects, understanding pollination biology, and genetic gain in bananas. The outlook emphasizes transitioning to One CGIAR Focus, refining product profiles, and involving stakeholders for sustainable seed delivery options.

  1. Feedback to the ABBB team based on discussions during the 2021 annual review meeting by SAG Eva Weltzien

  2. Progress and Achievements Despite COVID 19 solid progress was made The capacity building efforts during BBB are starting to show! Integration of the NARO Food Science Team into ABBB opens new opportunities for Matooke breeding New releases, new resistances, new markers, Integration of NARO and IITA breeding teams with clear roles and responsibilities Development of drafts of Product Profiles opens scope for more collaboration with social science teams and private sector Pathology work integrated into breeding and pre-breeding work Btract and Musabase are increasingly being used for data capture and breeding operations

  3. Some Thoughts Opportunity for more linkage between mapping projects and genome resources, and some thought put into markers plus genomic context in order inform transferability between germplasm Continue to enhance use of Btract and Musabase Are we doing enough to improve understandings of pollination biology and seed germination? What do we know about the genetics and gxe of the quality traits? Need for common understanding of genetic gain in the context of Matooke and Mchare Bananas?

  4. Outlook ABBB is at mid-term > transition to One CGIAR Focus will likely be on output and change of farmers and consumers realities - achieving defined genetic gains that provide planned benefits to targeted customers Continue refining product profiles, based on improved understanding of customer demands , including gender considerations Firm-up selection strategies towards prioritized specific targets Involve relevant actors, and stakeholders, for developing sustainable seed delivery options to reach targeted customers and document benefits

  5. Outlook continued: 1. Build business case(s) for successful breeding program(s) including delivery in the short term, with gender considerations, 2. Plan strategically with other RTB programs for sharing facilities and expertise 3. Prioritize short-term research needs to enable the functioning of the breeding program: targeting of the program, improve efficiencies and genetic gains, 4. Assess feasibility of the BPAT recommendations for the longer-term change in selection strategy

  6. THANK YOU
