A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because their wickedness has confronted Me. 3 However, Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the LORD s presence. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, from the LORD s presence.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 4 Then the LORD hurled a violent wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break apart. 5 The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his god. They threw the ship s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel and had stretched out and fallen into a deep sleep.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 6 The captain approached him and said, What are you doing sound asleep? Get up! Call to your god. Maybe this god will consider us, and we won t perish. 7 Come on! the sailors said to each other. Let s cast lots. Then we ll know who is to blame for this trouble we re in. So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we re in. What is your business and where are you from? What is your country and what people are you from?
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 9 He answered them, I m a Hebrew. I worship Yahweh, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land. 10 Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, What is this you ve done? The men knew he was fleeing from the LORD s presence, because he had told them. 11 So they said to him, What should we do to you to calm this sea that s against us? For the sea was getting worse and worse.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 12 He answered them, Pick me up and throw me into the sea so it may quiet down for you, for I know that I m to blame for this violent storm that is against you. 13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn t because the sea was raging against them more and more. 14 So they called out to the LORD: Please, Yahweh, don t let us perish because of this man s life, and don t charge us with innocent blood! For You, Yahweh, have done just as You pleased.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 15 Then they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. 16 The men feared the LORD even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows. 17 Now the LORD had appointed a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the fish three days and three nights. -Jonah 1:1-17-
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Is Jonah a true account? A metaphor or an allegory (like the Pilgrim s Progress of the spiritual journey) If Jonah was simply a metaphor or allegory why would Jesus refer to Jonah as a true person and real account (Matthew 12:38- 42)?
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Observations 1. The Lord confronts wickedness and calls man on it (v.1-3) 2. Man will flee God s presence when presented with His will and work (v.1-3) 3. God cares about the wicked and wickedness of man (v.1-3)
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Observations 4. God will chastise man for his disobedience and pursue him until man obeys, repents and responds (v.4-2:10)
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 7 Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. 9 If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, 10 even there Your hand will lead me; Your right hand will hold on to me.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 11 If I say, Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will be night 12 even the darkness is not dark to You. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to You. -Psalm 139:7-12-
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Observations 4. God will chastise man for his disobedience and pursue him until man obeys, repents and responds (v.4-2:10) 5. God will use extreme circumstances and situations to get our attention. He will use what is needed in accordance to the hardness of our hearts (v.4-5a)
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Observations 6. Man is capable of extreme stubbornness, uncompassionate and merciless actions (v.5c) 7. Man will call out to God in times of danger and need of saving (v.5, 6). Man will acknowledge God when all other avenues are exhausted.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 18 For God s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, 19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world,
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse. 21 For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened. -Rom. 1:18-21
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 People suppress the truth of God and are held responsible without excuse.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Observations 8. Man will suppress the truth of God and be held responsible without excuse (v.5, 2:8)
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. -Jonah 2:8 KJV Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own Mercy. -NKJV Those who cling to worthless idols forsake faithful love. HCSB Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. ESV Those who worship hollow gods, god-frauds, walk away from their only true love. -MSG
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Those who cling to worthless idols forsake faithful love. Jonah 2:8 Are you clinging to any worthless idols? Hallow gods? Truth: all idols are worthless
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Observations 8. Man will suppress the truth of God and be held responsible without excuse (v.5, 2:8) Man will seek to sail to Tarshish! Are you sailing to or in Tarshish?
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Observations 8. Man will suppress the truth of God and be held responsible without excuse (v.5, 2:8) 9. Man will seek to know why trouble comes upon them (v.7) Man desires both accountability and to escape accountability.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Observations 10. Man s trouble comes down to whom we worship (v.9) I am a Hebrew who worships Yahweh, the God of the heavens Talk is cheap!
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can his faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food 16 and one of you says to them, Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, but you don t give them what the body needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way faith, if it doesn t have works, is dead by itself.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 18 But someone will say, You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith from my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. The demons also believe and they shudder. 20 Foolish man! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless?
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 One can claim to worship God, but if there is no work, there is no faith. False worship is disobedience in action! True allegiance is always evidenced by what we do or do not do.
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Who do I worship? Who do I belong to? Am I responsible?
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. -Mt. 28:18-20
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Disciples of Jesus 1. Go Take action! Work! 2. Make - Disciples 3. Baptize Commit to Jesus Lordship 4. Teach Follow Jesus 5. Remember Who they belong to! Who do I belong to?
A Messenger of Favor? Jonah 1-2 Pastors, Elders, Teachers of Jesus 11 And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God s Son, growing into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ s fullness. Eph. 4:11-13
