STAAR Testing Dates Date Assessment April 10 Grade 5 Mathematics April 11 May 14 Grade 5 Reading Grade 5 Mathematics (retest) May 15 Grade 5 Reading (retest) May 16 June 26 June 27 Grade 5 Science Grade 5 Mathematics (retest) Grade 5 Reading (retest)
Student Success Initiative (SSI) Applies to students in 5TH Grade Students must pass the STAAR reading and mathematics tests to be promoted to the sixth grade. Students have three opportunities to pass. If a student does not pass one or both tests, the student must participate in additional instruction. (See SSI brochure for more information.)
STAAR Reading Test-Taking Strategies 1. Skim and Scan to Establish the Purpose. (Identify genre, text features and structure.) Read the title. 5. Double Check for Accuracy: Make sure your answers are neatly bubbled, and do the 2 finger check to make sure you haven t skipped any pages or questions. 2. Read the passage and focus on Key Words. Underline important words while reading. Write the main ideas next to each paragraph to help you remember what you ve read. 4. Mark Your Answer Choices: Put an Xnext to incorrect answers and a ? next to possible answers. 3. Circle important words in the question. Prove Your Answers: Underline text evidence and put the paragraph # next to each question that can be proven. Come back to the tough questions later. Circle the question # for difficult questions that you need to come back to.

How Can You Help? The TEKS focus greatly on conceptual understanding and fluency. By the end of 5th grade, students must be able to add and subtract whole numbers, decimals, and fractions fluently. Students must also be able to multiply and divide whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Multiply a three-digit number by a two-digit number Divide up to a four-digit whole number divided by a two-digit whole number Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide Decimals (up to hundredths) Add and Subtract Fractions (like and unlike denominators)
