The SEASON project led by KTH Sweden focuses on defining experiments to demonstrate compliance with safety directives for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). It covers licensing, manufacturing, transport, operation, decommissioning, and waste management aspects. The consortium includes European SMR vendors, utilities, research institutes, and academia, with regulatory bodies and end users participating in advisory roles.

  1. NFRP 4 (Research on the safety of small modular reactors) SEASON Small, Efficient And Safe Operation of Nuclear Proposer: KTH Sweden Contact Persons: Janne Wallenius [janwal@kth.se] Jakub Heller [jakub.heller@evalion.cz] (adm.)

  2. Scope The SEASON project will define an essential set of experiments and associated methodology permitting to show how SMRs of European design may comply with the amended Euratom Safety Directives, thereby assisting the licensing process for SMRs. Some of these experiments are carried out within the project, others are designed and assessed for future implementation. Focus is on concepts based on technologies that are feasibly deployable. In the context of SEASON this is interpreted as small reactors that historically have been used for production of utility to customers.

  3. WP1: Definition and design of experiments in support of licensing. WP2: Recommendations for licensing in global context. WP3: Safety of modular manufacturing. WP4: Safety of modular transport. WP5: Safety of modular and remote operation. WP6: Safety of modular decommissioning & waste management.

  4. The SEASON consortium consists of a well balanced mix of European SMR vendors nuclear power utilities, research institutes and academia from all regions of Europe: KTH, ENEA, ICN, NCBJ, LeadCold, Westinghouse, URENCO, ENGIE, SCK-CEN, Delft Uni Regulatory bodies in Canada, UK, Sweden, Argentina and Indonesia will be invited to participate in the advisory board of the project. An end user group will be formed, with invitations going to power utilities, mining and shipping companies in Canada, the Caribbean, UK, Australia, Indonesia and Korea.
