  1. For adults in the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections

  2. Young Leaders The Basics Explorer Scouts: 14-18 years old All YLs are considered to be Explorer Scouts, even if they do not attend an Explorer unit. They are welcome to attend any Explorer Unit at any time. Volunteering in a Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop Must take a 12 month break from their own Scout Troop before becoming a YL there Must be registered with the District YL unit Can come from a variety of backgrounds Finishing Scouts or from an Explorer Unit External: Duke of Edinburgh s Award, Girlguiding Awards New to Scouting

Icknield Young Leader Unit What we do in Icknield: YL unit runs once a month Delivers all modules over 2 years Module A once a term Works with Groups and sections to place YLs No more than 3 YLs per section YL contact in each group Award YL belt buckles and badges YL wear district scarf rather than Group scarf Encourage them to also be in an activity based unit 2 leaders on the team to comply with safeguarding requirements

Falkes Young Leader Unit What we do in Falkes: YL unit runs 2 weekends per year Deliver all modules over 1 year Module A for all new YLs at their meeting place within 3 months of YL starting Volunteering at the section Have a Unit Facebook Page (Falkes Young Leaders) No more than 3 YLs per section YL contact in each group Award YL belt buckles, Module A woggle badges Run Emergency Aid Stage 4 once a year (Module K) Encourage them to also be in an Explorer unit 2 leaders on the team, plus the District Explorer Scout Commissioner

  5. Role of a Young Leader The role of the Young Leader is to: Plan, run and evaluate activities Take part in programme planning Take part in planning Camps/Nights Away Help run sectional forums Undertake training With support, everything that an adult leader does!

  6. YL Scheme 10 Modules & 4 Missions *Module training will be delivered by the YL Unit Leadership Team Module A Prepare for take off! Compulsory for all Young Leaders (and external young volunteers) within 3 months of starting Covers key areas such as: - Safeguarding and the orange, purple & green card - Summarise the purpose and methods of Scouting - Essential information for YLs that they need for their role - An understanding of how to keep themselves safe as a YL - Policy, Organisation and Rules - Safety and Risk assessment

  7. Module BTaking the Lead - Introduces YLs to the different concepts of leadership. Module C That s the way to do it! - Gives YLs an understanding of how to demonstrate and teach a variety of skills Module D Understanding Behaviour - Gives YLs an understanding of different behaviours and explores potential reasons behind behaviours Module E Game On! - Gives YLs an understanding of the importance of games and explores different game ideas

  8. Module F Making Scouting Accessible & Inclusive - Teaches YLs how to create an environment that is suitable for all mental & physical needs. Gives YLs a look into different disabilities and needs. Module G What is a High Quality Programme? - Explores the Scouting programme, badges & awards at a wider look than just their section, with the view of incorporating this into section programmes Module H Programme Planning - Provides YLs with the skills to plan a high quality programme over a term Module I What Did They Say? - Demonstrates the importance of listening to the views of others and discussing these accordingly.

Module J Communicate It! - Gives awareness of the importance of different communication styles and the impact your style of chosen communication can have on others Module K First Aid Masterclass - Teaches first aid to the standard that a YL can take action in case of an emergency situation. YLs are awarded Emergency Aid Stage 4 badge for completing this training

  10. Young Leaders Missions *These are to be completed within their section with support of the section leaders Mission 1 GamePlan and run a variety of games of different types (a minimum of 3). One game must be indoors and one outdoors. Mission 2 - Activity - Plan and run an activity (not a game) as part of either the section programme or a camp programme. Mission 3 Programme Planning - To take the section s programme ideas to a programme planning meeting. (Ideally, we would encourage the YL to run a forum with the Section and go to a programme planning meeting and use the ideas from the Section in the programme). Mission 4 - Delivery Take responsibility for organising and running part of the section programme. This can also be activities at a Camp

Young Leaders Missions Some Pointers Missions are designed to be done in order as they are increasing in responsibility YLs should plan and run with adult supervision Mission evaluation - To be discussed with either ESL (YL) or their Section Leader When evaluating missions try asking the YL s What have you done for your mission? Why did you do it? What do you want to achieve? What did the section learn/achieve from it? What did you learn from it? What would you do differently next time? How do you feel about it now?

YL Badges & Awards Module A badge Young Leader Belt Buckle- Awarded for completing all modules and missions Certificate Young Leader Service Award (worn on adult uniform) Awarded on 18th birthday for completing all modules and missions Module A Woggle Mission badges All YL badges & awards can be ordered through your district badge shop or via the scouts website, under the Explorers section. The YL unit leaders will buy and award these.

  13. YL Programme & Additional Awards As the YLs are also Explorers (even if they don t actively attend an Explorer Unit) they are eligible to complete their Scouting Awards Chief Scouts Platinum, Chief Scouts Diamond and Queen Scouts Awards The International Community & Values (ICV) requirements for the CS Platinum/Diamond and QSA can be incorporated into Section programme nights CS Platinum Award CS Diamond Award Queen Scout Award Their YL work can also be used towards all different stages of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Chief Scouts Platinum Award Designed to work alongside the Bronze DofE Award (if the YL is not completing DoE, must complete 3 months Skill, 3 months Physical & 3 months Volunteering, plus a practice and assessed expedition). Must be an Explorer/YL for 6 months Complete minimum of 6 nights away 2 items from the ICV list Certificates and Badges are available from District Badge Shop or online Scouts Store under Explorers section

  15. Chief Scouts Diamond Award Designed to work alongside the Silver DofE Award (if the YL is not completing DofE, they must complete 3/6moths Skill, 3/6 months Physical & 6 months Volunteering, plus a practice and assessed expedition) Must be an Explorer/YL for 12 months Minimum 12 nights away Complete 2 items from the ICV list Certificates and Badges are available from District Badge Shop or online Scouts Store under Explorers section

  16. Queen Scout Award QSA must be completed between ages 16-25 Designed to work alongside the Gold D of E Award (if YL not completing D of E, must complete 6/12moths Skill, 6/12 months Physical & 12 months Volunteering plus a residential experience, practice expedition and assessed expedition) Must be an Explorer/YL (or Network Member) for 18 months Complete minimum 18 nights away Complete 2 items from the ICV list (if C.S. Platinum & Diamond Awards completed) A presentation must be completed to the county QSA advisor & members of the District Team The YL/Leader will then be invited to a formal presentation

  17. Working with and supporting Young Leaders There needs to be a good partnership between the YL Unit and the Section/Group YLs are not a Section/Group asset they are on loan from the YL Unit Involve the YL Unit early if there are problems Remember - Young Leaders are still Young People Involve them in the planning Get them to run games, activities and evenings as their confidence grows Treat them as part of your leadership team and not just another child you will get a lot more out of them if you integrate them! Never leave a YL unattended with Young People they are under 18 and cannot be solely responsible for the Young People When on camp, the YL cannot share accommodation with the Young People or Leaders they need their own accommodation (males and females can share with parental permission) On camp, the YL is to be given a minimum one hour per day break from their duties On camp, you need one leader to be the agreed go to Leader for the YLs YLs need to be added into the child part of the adult:child ratio remember they are under 18 Give them a variety of tasks not just the drinks and snacks!

  18. Working With and Supporting Young Leaders Make them feel part of the leadership team and show that to the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Support them if the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts play them up They are there to learn so please guide and encourage them Encourage them to do all their modules and missions If you invest in them, when they turn 18 they may become one of your leaders Help them to have fun!
