  2. Object #1, Drinking Cup

  3. Object 1: Drinking Cup This one probably needs an explanation as to why I chose it. I chose the cup because when Brent goes to Chaz s party, Chaz makes fun of him and it causes Brent to drink Alcohol. This leads to Brent getting in the car intoxicated and getting into the car accident. The drinking cup or alcohol made Brent's journey start It is interesting to think about what Brent s life might have been like if he was sober and thinking straight. Would he have gotten in the accident? Would Lea be alive? I think that the alcohol made Brent feel free, his worries slipped his mind for a second. " He replaced his headphones to help shut out the scene and stood staring, dazed, at the bottles before him. He felt as if he were still onstage. Playing to his audience and his own need, he poured himself a scotch and soda, heavy on the former. He added ice and sipped it quickly, feeling it run through him like a river of lava. " - Page 11

  4. Object #2 Lea s Photo

  5. Object 2: Leas Photo Lea's photo is referred to throughout the book, Almost as a reminder of Brent's task. As Brent went along his journey he kept referring back to Lea's photo and making connections to the world around him. He opened his own wallet, took out Lea's picture, and studied it in solitude. He found her entrancing. She looked Hawaiian, her skin the color of cinnamon, smooth as sanded wood, her forehead high, her hair long and straight. Her eyes were faintly Asian. He probed the photo for new information and now saw that she'd drawn her hair, shiny and black as obsidian, to the side with a clip. Her dress was white. Or was it only a blouse? He examined the pattern embroidered on the bodice. She wore a gold necklace, fine as spider's silk, but he couldn't see what hung from it. He scrutinized her smile from close range, almost felt her breath on his face. Strange to think she was now smiling at her killer. Yet she wasn't her head was turned at an angle. He stared into her cheerful brown eyes, knowing she would never look back at him but always off to the side. This was a relief. Her direct gaze would have vaporized him with accusation. Page 44

  6. Object #3: Bus Pass

  7. Object 3: Bus Pass The bus pass is almost like a pathway to Brent's journey. Like a key unlocking a door to an unknown room. Brent's bus pass allowed him to go anywhere he needed 'unlocking' the path he needed to take in order to redeem himself. "This is crazy!" He appealed to Miss Gill. "That's not the kind of thing you ask for!" He faced Mrs. Zamora. "And how's he supposed to zip around the country? In his private jet?" She pulled something else out of her purse. "I bought him a Greyhound bus pass. Good for forty-five days. He can go anywhere." Page 41

  8. Object #4: Whirligig Book

  9. Object 4: Whirligig Book For my last item, I chose Brent's whirligig book. I chose this because the whirligig book to me feels like it is Brent's map. Brent uses that book to navigate through the world of whirligigs and also in a way acts as a checklist for Brent's journey. As Brent goes on he gets better at building whirligigs and starts to attempt harder tasks towards the end of the novel. He opened his whirligig book and looked through it between glances out the window. He'd found it in the sixth store he'd tried, a dingy used book shop downtown on Wabash Avenue. It was an old, loose-spined hardback called Make Your Own Whirligigs and Weathervanes. A previous owner had penciled tiny, masculine-looking notes in the margins. Page 42
