Holy smokes, its almost the end of term! This means that it's time for you to prepare for your exam. This PowerPoint will go through: OVERVIEW 1. The format of the exam 2. Review 3. How to prepare for the exam 2
EXAM! The exam is scheduled for Thursday, August 12th at 4:15PM EST on Blackboard. You have two (2) hours to write the exam. Your exam is worth 25% of your final grade. You can use a dictionary, a thesaurus and your course materials for the exam. You should type and submit your exam to Blackboard as a Word document (or similar). Don't submit as Mac Pages. 3
MORE DETAILS ON FORMAT OF THE EXAM The exam will appear in your Assignments folder starting at 4:15 P.M. on Thursday, August 12. If you don t see it please email me immediately. Once you begin the exam you must finish and submit it. I will not accept late exams. The exam should be submitted to Blackboard. Do not email your exam to me. If you foresee a personal or academic conflict for the time of the exam, please let me know immediately so that we can develop an alternative plan. If you have technical difficulties on the day of the exam, email me immediately so that we can develop an alternative plan. 4
As stated in Slide #3, you can use a dictionary, a thesaurus and your course materials (the PowerPoints, and readings I provided on Blackboard). You cannot use outside sources. This includes materials or input from friends or family, discussions on WhatsApp groups, materials from the internet, spinning tools, or any other source outside of course material that you did not develop yourself. Any violations of these expectations will be submitted to the Academic Integrity Committee for review. WHAT'S ALLOWED? 5
After you write the exam, I am going to hide the "Exam" column and the "Total Grade" column in your Grade Book. WHEN DO I KNOW MY GRADE? You will not see your exam or receive comments on your exam after you have written it. I will grade your exam and determine your final grade. This is the standard process for English and Liberal Studies. 6
WHAT'S ON THE EXAM? The exam short answer. It will include five short answer questions (approx. 300-350 words per question). The exam will cover themes, ideas, politics, etc. of the films, readings, and conversations from the course. It will ask that you analyze a few of the films we examined in this course. 7
WHAT IS WORLD CINEMA World cinema has existed for decades and has circulated across borders The current discussion of world cinema or new world cinema begins in the 1980s when changes to the geopolitical climate affected filmmaking (ie. globalization, new technologies, world politics) International films speak to social conditions and attitudes of their times 8

WHAT IS GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM? An artistic movement or genre that originated in Europe The artists who established the important aesthetic trends of the movement lived or worked in Germany at the height of the period hence we refer to it as German Expressionism A rejection of Western conventions A depiction of reality in a distorted and emotional form Artists were interested in evoking emotions more than producing realistic art A movement in art, architecture, film, and theatre 10
WHAT IS ITALIAN NEOREALISM? The term Neorealismo, directly translates to new reality or new realism. It emerged during World War II in Italy. Neorealismo signified a trend in art and film that aimed to provide insight into the contemporary Italian society of the 1940 s. The films associated with Italian Neorealism are focused on showing Italy removed from Fascist influence. Italian Neorealism is regarded as the beginning of the Golden Era of Italian cinema.

WHAT IS THE FRENCH NEW WAVE The New Wave or La Nouvelle Vague is a film movement that rose to popularity in the late 1950s in Paris, France (1958 1968). The movement aimed to give directors full creative control over their work It has been considered to be one of the most influential in cinematic history It began with a group of film critics who wrote for a French film journal called Cahiers du Cinema It began as a movement against the traditional path that French Cinema followed
French New Wave stories tended to be loosely organized around rather complex, spontaneous young characters. THEMES FRENCH NEW WAVE Unpolished sometimes disjointed film styles fit these rather chaotic, good-humored tales of youths wandering through contemporary France.
WHAT IS THE IRANIAN NEW WAVE Film in Iran have had substantial growth after the Revolution of 1978-79 and gained in popularity at the film festivals in the decades that followed The factors leading to the rise of the New Wave in Iran were, in part, due to the intellectual and political movements of the time. Iranian New Wave films shared some characteristics with the European art films of the period, in particular Italian Neorealism (Wikipedia) Iranian films have a distinctively Iranian cinematic language "that champions the poetry in everyday life and the ordinary person by blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality, feature film with documentary. WHAT IS NEW MEXICAN CINEMA New Mexican cinema, Nuevo Cine Mexicano, was a movement, or new wave that began in the early 1990s Nuevo Cine Mexicano is considered to be the rebirth of cinema This rebirth led to high international praise as well as box-office success, unseen since the golden age of Mexican cinema of the 1930s to 1960s.

WHAT IS SCANDINAVIAN CINEMA? The Scandinavian countries include: Norway Sweden Denmark Finland Iceland the Faroe Islands and some surrounding northern islands Greenland is also included in this group
Nordic nature is highlighted They dissect complicated family relations NORDIC CINEMA THEMES They give the audience food for thought These are not easy-to-watch rom-coms, but complex, sometimes controversial films about contemporary real-world issues.
WHAT IS THE KOREAN NEW WAVE? A film movement that emerged in the 1990s Before the New Wave, South Korea did not have a home-grown commercial cinema of note, and audiences preferred to watch Hollywood films in cinemas and follow American stars. The box office success of Shiri, which was released in 1999, opened the way for a blossoming of commercial films, and introduced the term Korean blockbuster , which came to describe big-budget for Korea crowd-pleasing movies. Audiences who had generally been indifferent to Korean films turned out in force to see such movies, and they were supported by critical acclaim. Korean films became lucrative as a result, and investment poured in.

TIPS Please review all of the films & PowerPoints. Review your discussion questions (you may want to read other responses as well!) Have access to a dictionary and a thesaurus. Think through your home space. Will you be able to get the quiet and focus that you need to write your exam? Do you need to let the people you're living with know when your exam is so that they can support you to focus? Practice deep breathing. 24
BIG PICTURE The last year has been hard. I'm sure you've heard this a lot by now, but it's still true. It's somewhat important that you study for this exam and that you take your progress seriously. Study, read, ask questions. But don't forget that this is one piece of a much bigger picture. 25
