  1. L E S S O N 1 1 I Samuel

  2. Introduction to I Samuel I & II Samuel and I & II Kings are actually all one Book. Samuel, Nathan, and Gad are the Authors of I & II Samuel. Samuel is the second great prophet of Israel - the first was Moses. There are 3 main characters in the book: Samuel, Saul, and David Samuel - Ch 1 - 8. Samuel and Saul - Ch 9 - 15. Samuel, Saul, and David - Ch 16 - 31. Theme: God is working His Divine purpose, through all the events of Israel s history, preparing a people through whom the Messiah will come. Like all the other Books of the Bible so far, I Samuel is filled with intrigue, deceit, & bloodshed.

  3. Samuel is Born Hannah was praying for a son. The high priest, Eli thought Hannah was drunk. In her prayer she promised to give her child to the Lord. Hannah gave birth to a son whom she named Samuel. Samuel in Hebrew means Heard of God After he had be weaned / grown a little she brought him to the Tabernacle. Samuel served under Eli at Shiloh Eli s sons, Hophni and Phinehas Abused their priestly duties Eli was told they would die on the same day.

  4. Samuel is Called Samuel heard a voice calling his name so he ran to Eli three times. Finally, Eli realized that God was calling Samuel. He instructed Samuel to say, Speak, Lord, for Your servant listens

  5. Samuel is a Prophet The Word of the Lord was rare in those days. God told Samuel He would soon punish Eli and his family. Samuel performed his duties diligently as a priest and as a prophet of the Lord. God continued to reveal Himself to the Prophet Samuel throughout his entire lifetime. Samuel played a key role in the transition from the period of the biblical judges to the institution of the monarchy.

  6. What Samuel Teaches About Listening Who: Listen toGod. How:By being still and answering God. What: Tell others what God said Told Eli. Told Israel. Told us Today.

  7. What do we learn about the character of God in I Samuel?

  8. Key Verse Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. I Samuel 15:22

  9. What Do You Think? We must place these stories within the larger context of God s salvation story.

Key Verse In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. Hebrews 1:1-3
