Learning Objectives 1. To understand the meaning of the Shahadah. 2. To understand the importance of the Shahadah. 3. To reflect on submission in our own lives.

Starter Think-Pair-Share Discuss with the person next to you why the major practices of Islam are called the FIVE PILLARS.

The Five Pillars Muslims follow the five pillars of Islam . These pillars are the five most important duties or obligations that every Muslim must fulfil. They represent true worship and submission to Allah. In the same way as pillars support a building, so these five actions hold up the faith, keeping it strong and sturdy.

Is it true? ... Consider a statement that you believe to be 100% true. In your books write down I believe followed by the statement. What has to be behind this statement to make it true?

Shahadah The first pillar The Shahadah is a testimony or a witness to what Muslims believe is the truth at the heart of Islam. The declaration is introduced with the words . I bear witness..... Can you think of situations in which people give witness statements or provide testimony? What does this mean? What makes such declarations different from other statements?

Shahadah The Declaration of Faith (shahadah) La ilaha illa Allah Muhammad Rasulu Allah Translation: There is no god but God, Muhammad is His Messenger

Shahadah Shia There is no god but God. Muhammad is the messenger of God and Ali is a divinely appointed authority.

Shahadah The declaration of faith Reciting the Shahadah initiates a person into the Islamic faith. By reciting the Shahadah a person submits themselves to Allah in all things. It is always said aloud in Arabic. It encapsulates the main theology (the key beliefs) of Islam. A person must have a full understanding: intellectually, emotionally, volitionally. Think Pair Share What does full understanding mean?

Submission Once Muslims have recited the Shahadah they have agreed to submit to Allah in all aspects of their lives. What authorities do (or should!) YOU submit to in your life? E.G. The law, your parents etc Why do you submit to these authorities?
