What is Christs Atonement? The Bible Dictionary defines Christ s Atonement as follows: Jesus Christ by His selection and foreordination in the Grand Council before the world was formed, His divine Sonship, His sinless life, the shedding of His blood in the garden of Gethsemane, His death on the cross and subsequent bodily resurrection from the grave made a perfect atonement for all mankind.

Where Does this Focus on Gethsemane Come From?

Scriptures Stating Christ Suffered for our Sins in Gethsemane Scriptures Stating Christ Suffered for our Sins on the cross Verses need to specify an explicit connection with redemption, suffering for sin, etc. Verses needs to explicitly be about Gethsemane or the Crucifixion/death of Christ. Suffer does not count unless there is a specific reference to Gethsemane or crucifixion/death ( suffering is sometimes connected with Gethsemane (see Mosiah 3:7), but also with Christ s death (see 1 Nephi 19:10 12, Jacob 1:8, and Helaman 14:20). Atoning blood does not count unless there is a specific reference to Gethsemane or crucifixion/death (such verses could be about Christ bleed[ing] at every pore (D&C 19:16 18) or The blood of his cross (Colossians 1:20).

While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Christ died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3). I Nephi saw that he was lifted up upon the cross and slain for the sins of the world (1 Nephi 11:32). He [Christ] surely must die, that salvation may come (Helaman 14:15). At least 18 Book of Mormon passages teach Christ died for our sins

An Important Clarification Gethsemane and the Cross are not in competition with each other. Both are vital aspects of Christ s Atonement. My point is that some church members some of the time underemphasize the importance of Christ s Crucifixion.

An Important Clarification The reason why I have demonstrated the scriptural emphasis on Christ s Crucifixion is because it seems that many Latter-day Saints have an internalized belief that Gethsemane is more important than the Cross in terms of salvation from sin. If people have that belief, they will be less likely to want to learn more about Christ s Crucifixion. I hope that the fact that the scriptures and church leaders emphasize the atoning significance of the Crucifixion motivate us to want to study it more carefully because doing so will change our lives.

Why Does It Matter?

Why Does It Matter? The scriptures are our standard works understanding what they say matters. When Church members accurately understand the importance of Christ s Crucifixion it can help them build bridges with other Christians. Better comprehending what the Savior experienced on the cross can deepen our connection with him and his Atonement. Additional reasons (discussed in our next class)

Any increase in our understanding of His atoning sacrifice draws us closer to Him.
