  1. Conducting New Member Orientation Sessions January 21 & 23, 2014 DISTRICT 12 LEADERSHIP TRAINING

  2. OBJECTIVES Objective 1: To provide benefits of conducting an orientation for new members. Objective 2: To identify best practices for conducting a new member orientation. Objective 3: To provide tools / job aids / key contacts for Clubs to use. INFORM, INVEST, INVOLVE

  3. New Member Orientation What is a New Member Orientation? Opportunity for new members to learn about Zonta and how to become engaged in the club. Purpose of a new member orientation session is to: Share knowledge and information about Zonta. Provide opportunity for building relationships between current and new members. Strengthen the club through active participation. Why is a New Member Orientation important to Zonta? Retain new members via early commitment. Early training of Zonta potentially encourages involvement in club, area and district functions. Development of stronger bonds between members.

  4. Benefits of a New Member Orientation Program Benefits to new members: Early understanding of Zonta s mission drives involvement and increased personal support of club. Greater connectivity with all parts of Zonta. Information on culture, inner workings, and governance of Zonta. Clarification of new member s role in supporting Zonta s mission . Benefits to current members: Gratification of passing on Zonta knowledge. Additional organizational support and increased participation for club activities. Drives potential retention of new members.

  5. Best Practices who, what, when, where, how? Who (organizes it): Membership committee responsible for conducting the orientation. Unless,clubs have a New Member Committee. more to follow What (to include): Zonta International Mission, Vision, History Objectives Zonta Emblem / Zonta Rose Structure / Hierarchy Biennium Goals Foundation / Interaction with United Nations Key Dates

  6. Best Practices who, what, when, where, how? What (to include): District / Area Structure - as relates to International and Club Committees Key meetings - District Conference, Area Meetings Club History Club Board and committees Service & Advocacy Projects Fundraising activities Meeting protocol, location Dues structure, financials Responsibilities as a new member Mentor assignment (if not already completed)

  7. Best Practices who, what, when, where, how? When (to have): As soon as practicable, but recommend within 30 days of new member joining. Where (to have): current meeting location, member s home, restaurant How (to do i.e. format): One time session for 2-3 hours Goal orientation and provide highlights Benefit one time session if schedules are challenging. Con could create information overload. Example: Zonta District 12 New Member Orientation Power Point Presentation , customized for your club Created for you just add in your club information Handout the New Member Orientation Manual Created for you just add in your club information

  8. Best Practices who, what, when, where, how? How (to do i.e. Format): Multiple sessions (2-3 sessions for 1-2 hours each) Goal orientation over multiple sessions, focusing on a topic each session. Benefit provides for more in-depth discussion on topic & time to digest previous material. Con scheduling of multiple sessions can be challenging. Example topics: Session 1: Overview Zonta District 12 PowerPoint Presentation Session 2: Club Topics with speakers Session 3: Club service activity

  9. Best Practices who, what, when, where, how? How (to do i.e. Format): One year program (New Member Committee): Goal orientation over full year New Member Committee consists of new members and 1-3 established members. Not the same as the Membership Committee. Purpose fully inform and involve new members Time 1 Year and meet monthly Assign an activity immediately, such as organizing Amelia Earhart event or club event. Monthly meeting topics based on timely Zonta International topics or Club events. Session 1: Overview Session 2: Planning for event(s) Session 3-12 topics relevant January Amelia Earhart March International Women s Day / Rose Day November/December 16 days of Activism Benefit provides full involvement of new member with focus on Zonta or Club specific topics. Con an additional committee for club
