Ask Yourself Why People Join Volunteer Organizations To make a difference in peoples lives To learn something new To feel better about themselves To support an organization, community or cause To develop personally or professionally To meet and interact with new people
Ask Yourself Why People are not Joining Your Club They don t know about you and what you do Think there may be too many meetings and requirements Already committed to something else No one asked them They feel they wont measure up They don t clearly understand what they will have to do
Is Your Club Ready to Recruit Establish a clear purpose for your club. What is your mission? Know your vision.. Where will you focus your efforts, who will you serve and what is the value to the community Clearly articulate your goals and values Develop long and short term plans to keep your club centered.
Measure up Have informal discussions within your club about your goals and objectives Survey your members to get their opinions and identify problems within your club Refer to the Membership Satisfaction Survey on page 274 of the Yearbook. Analyze the results and share the conclusions
Start Planning Appoint a Membership Recruitment Team Identify those members who have the skills to organize, plan and promote your club within the community. This should include members who Get a job done Are tech savvy and creative Experienced with social media and public relations Are warm, friendly and inviting
Ask Yourself. Who are potential members? What target audience would I like to attract to your club What would this target audience find positive about volunteering with your club How can we repackage our existing program to appeal to the target audience?
Identify your target Are you looking to recruit newer younger members, family and friends, professional women or retired ladies? Do your community projects and programs appeal to the target audience? Do your club meetings provide opportunities for your target audience?
Recruiting Suggestions Create a program focused on your target audience such as a Volunteer Moms Mixer Conduct a service project that relates to your target audience and invite them to join you. Create a marketing design and language to speak to and attract your target audience Create visibility and make it relevant Refer to page 279 of the yearbook for many additional suggestions
Create Visibility Plan FUN information sessions- provide childcare if possible Have information at PTA meetings, back to school nights, newsletters, welcome wagon Distribute rack cards to book clubs, churches, gyms, pediatrician offices, baby boutiques be sure to include website link on brochures. Don t forget doctor s office and hairdressers Social Media, tweet, Facebook, blogs, digg. Be sure your online presence is attractive, up to date and informational Use sites like Nextdoor Neighbor and Volunteer match to promote your activities
How do YOU recruit volunteers Organization Website/ Social Media Brochures Newspaper ads or stories about your clubs activities Flyers advertising your events Word of mouth
Pro Active Recruitment Strategies Take your show on the road schedule your meeting in a new location with new visibility. Donate a new membership and dues to a charity auction Host a guest evening or appreciation night. Sponsor a booth at a community event Wear your GFWC apparel
Reasons to Join GFWC Contribute to the quality of life in your neighborhood and community Gain a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction Participate in interesting, informative and inspiring programs Explore and sharpen skills that can lead to professional advancement Expand your professional and personal network of contacts Build lifelong friendships Enjoy affinity programs that offer discounted rates on a varity of services and supplies
Welcome Your New Members Assign a member with common interests to mentor the new member Be sure they are warmly greeted and introduced at each event Provide an orientation that allows them to ask questions and be involved in the process. Listen to them! Get them involved in a club activity as soon as possible. Let them know that they and their talents are appreciated and thank them for joining you.
Lessons Learned We have to know who we are, what we are doing and who we want to do it with We need to learn to speak to all generations Visibility in the community needs to be consistent and frequent. Our programs and projects need to be relevant, interesting and appeal to many.
There is Financial Help Has your club applied for a seasonal membership grants from GFWC to help bring your recruitment ideas to life. Applications must be received by the following dates for membership events occurring in the designated seasonal recruitment cycle: Fall: September 1, 2018 Winter: December 1, 2018 Spring: March 1, 2019 Summer: June 1, 2019
Share What You Have Learned Use testimonials from your new members to promote your club and your projects. As a working professional, the club has been a great resource for keeping up with current issues and learning about new volunteer opportunities in my community.
