Established in 1970, Cabras Marine Corporation (CMC) is a prominent provider of marine services in the Northern Marianas Islands and Guam. As a woman-owned business enterprise, CMC offers pilot, tug, barge, and ship repair services, and has a dedicated apprenticeship program to train individuals for careers in the ship repair industry. The program aims to recruit, train, and develop men and women in ship repair, fostering a culture of learning and skill development. Partnering with Guam Community College and Guam Trades Academy, the apprenticeship program facilitates hands-on training and education for aspiring ship repair professionals.

ABOUT CABRAS MARINE Cabras Marine Corporation (CMC) was founded in 1970 and is the is the leading provider of pilot, tug, barge, spill response, firefighting and ferry services Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands. on Guam and the CMC is a small woman-owned business enterprise, ISO 9001:2008 certified, that is also HUBZone certified. (Owner Terry Marshall Watkins, President Joe Cruz) CMC has expanded its ship repair services on Guam and has two facilities that perform quality ship repair services; PACDIM located at the Commercial Port and PACDIM SRF which serves our military clients in Naval Base Guam.

  6. MISSION The mission of our Program: To revitalize the Ship Repair industry by recruiting, training and developing men and women for careers in ship repair. To develop a learning culture within our workplace, and committed to developing quality skills and inspiring others to continue to improve on their trade. Develop local talent and train residents in the technical areas so as to sustain ship repair capabilities on Guam for many years ahead. To develop core leadership principles in all students along with the character and technical competence that is required to fully meet the challenges of a ship repair career.

  7. APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM Initial goal is to have approximately 50 workers indentured as Apprentices by April 1, 2014 and graduate 100 Journeymen in 4 years. Program in place with Guam Community College and Guam Trades Academy, facilitated by Guam Department of Labor.

  8. APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM What is Apprenticeship? A partnership between the Company, employee, and the government. It s a form of post-secondary education like university or college Apprenticeships range from one (1) to six (6) years, majority are four (4) years in length. Apprentices are mentored by experienced journeyworkers in the practical application of the skills of a trade It s a structured combination of in-school (20%) and on the job (80%) education Takes unskilled or semi-skilled workers to the fully-skilled worker level Leads to a nationally recognized Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship which provides for portability.

HANDS ON CAREER TRAINING - Practical on-the-job training. AN EDUCATION - Occupation focused schooling paid for by the Program. A CAREER - one that s successful and long term with a competitive salary with little or no educational debt. CERTIFICATION - Industry issued, nationally recognized credential. High wage opportunities that meet or exceed those of many college graduates A higher quality of life and skills versatility.

  11. QUICK FACTS CMC s Apprenticeship Program began in May 2012 with five (5) employees. Today we have over 40 active apprentices. Ship repair industry, like construction, are seeing more women interested in trade occupations High wage opportunities that meet or exceed those of many college graduates Challenging and interesting work in a wide range of occupations Increased marketability and job security Opportunity to earn college credit in many occupational areas Apprentices = Journeyworker = Leaders in trade = Managers
