Mark 2:18 3:6 The Gospel of Mark Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus

Jesus is Rejected Mark 2:18-3:6 In their thoughts (2:6) In their questions to the disciples (2:16) In their questions to Jesus (2:18 & 24) Looking to accuse Jesus (3:2) Plotting to kill Jesus (3:6) WHY?

Jesus is Rejected Mark 2:18-3:6 Why? Because of his Conduct (and that of his disciples) Because he Challenges Because of his Claims

Jesus is Rejected Mark 2:18-3:6 Because of his Conduct (and that of his disciples) Jesus disciples were NOT fasting (2:18) Jesus perceived disregard for the Sabbath (2:24 & 3:2)

Jesus is Rejected Mark 2:18-3:6 Because he Challenges There is a time to fast and a time not to fast(2:19-20) God s only instruction to fast was on the Day of Atonement (Lev 16:29) Other OT examples of fasting: National crisis (2 Chron 20:3 & Est 4:16) Times of repentance (Dan 9:3) Times of personal anguish/sorrow (2 Sam 12:16) Now was nota time to fast for Jesus disciples! The Kingdom of God is near (1:14-15, 22, 26, 31, 34, 41, 2:5 &12)

Jesus is Rejected Mark 2:18-3:6 Because he Challenges There is a time to fast and a time not to fast(2:19-20) Pharisees knowledge of Scripture & Understanding (2:25-7) Interpretation and implementation of the Sabbath Law God s desire: Mercy, not sacrifice (Hosea 6:6) Love for God & others over religious rituals (Isaiah 58) A broken and contrite heart (Psalm 51:17)

Jesus is Rejected Mark 2:18-3:6 Because of his Claims He is the Bridegroom (2:19) For your Maker is your husband- the Lord Almighty is his name- the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth Isaiah 54:5 As a young man marries a maiden, so will your sons marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:5

Jesus is Rejected Mark 2:18-3:6 Because of his Claims He is the Bridegroom (2:19) To introduce something new, not to patch up something old (2:21-22) He is the Son of Man With God s Authority(Dan 7:13-14 & Mark 2:10 & 2:28) He is Lord of the Sabbath The creator of the Sabbath (2:27)
