  2. Learning Intentions In this lesson you will be learning more about: who the evangelist Mark was; who Mark wrote his Gospel for and why he wrote it; what sources Mark used and what was the main point of his Gospel; the way Mark depicts or presents Jesus. 2

  3. Fact-File on the Gospel according to Mark Author: Believed to be the man named Mark who was secretary to the apostle Peter. Date: Around AD 65-75. First Gospel to be written, just thirty-five years after Jesus death. Target audience: Greek-speaking Gentile (non-Jewish) people of Rome. Source of information for this Gospel: The apostle Peter. Main point of Gospel: Jesus is the Son of God. This is stated in the very first sentence. Peter makes the same statement in the middle of the Gospel according to Mark. The Roman centurion says it again after Jesus has died on the Cross. Details about Jesus that are not in this Gospel: The story of the birth of Jesus and details about Jesus growing up. 3

  4. The Jesus of Marks Gospel Mark s account of the Gospel is full of drama. He presents a clear picture of the kind of person Jesus was and he shows us how God was at work in the world through Jesus. Mark presents Jesus as a man who is often misunderstood and not recognised for who he really is; who takes the time to listen to children and to encourage and praise them; who shows compassion for those who are suffering or in any kind of need; who sometimes gets tired and angry; and who worries about his own suffering and death. Mark also shows us how God was working through Jesus to bring about the Kingdom of God on earth. People saw God s power in action in the miracles of Jesus. 4

  5. Stories in the Gospel of Mark Stories in the Gospel of Mark Look up these Bible references and read the stories: Mark 1:40-42 (Jesus and the leper ) Mark 3:1-5 (Jesus and the Pharisees and Sadducees) Mark 10:13-16 (Jesus welcomes the children Mark 11:12-13 (Jesus and the fig tree) Mark 14:32-34 (Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane) As you read the stories, find out the following information: Who are the characters in the story?
