WBLL Safety Program The safety of our players, coaches, staff and spectators are at the forefront of our concern The league has developed a safety plan called the ASAP Plan , which details all safety related topics. This plan is submitted each year for approval to Little League International (LLI) and posted on the league website. All managers and coaches are must review the ASAP plan.

  3. ASAP Plan The document contains in detail: Safety Code Treating Injuries Training Requirements Code of Conduct Lightning safety procedures Accident reporting Concession stand procedures

  4. Infection Prevention - NEW WBLL has developed Infection Prevention plans for players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and spectators Plans are located on the website under Safety Information Please review these carefully and understand that this situation is very fluid and may change often

  5. Infection Prevention Highlights Stay home if you are sick Ok to wear masks, but not mandatory Hand sanitizer will be handed out to each coach to start the year. Everyone is encouraged to carry hand sanitizer for personal use. Eliminate shared equipment as much as possible Umpires behind pitcher s mound Wipe down everything after the game No eating/gum/seeds in dugouts Social Distancing is encouraged Eliminate unneccesary touching Limited people in the dugout

  6. Equipment - NEW All equipment must be sanitized between use. Teams have been issued alcohol based spray cleaner to accomplish cleaning Shared helmets have been eliminated from all equipment bags Shared catchers gear has been eliminated except for Midwest and Majors. Rookies will not catch this year Player families have been strongly encouraged to obtain and use their own equipment this year If there is a hardship, coaches may check out equipment from WBLL Safety Director on an individual player basis

Ice Packs Ice pack are no longer supplied by the concession stand Ice packs are stored in the old scoreboard boxes in 4 locations around to complex, use your key to access West diamond, outside concession stand North diamond, outside 3rdbase dugout South diamond, outside 1stbase dugout Junior diamond, west of the lights box Notify Tara Schmidt if box becomes empty

Injury Prevention Inspect playing site before play Play close attention to weather conditions See ASAP plan for lightning facts and safety procedures Teach players the basics of good nutrition and hydration Conduct proper athletic conditioning (stretching, warm ups) Avoid over use Consistent and proper use of protective equipment Close supervision by coaches Compliance with WBLL rules, especially safety code of conduct

  10. Treating Injuries Step #1 If someone on the field is injured (player, coach, umpire, spectator) stop play immediately to protect injured person. Locate the parent/guardian

  11. Treating Injuries Step #2 Check breathing, pulse and alertness of injured party. If any of these are questionable: Send someone to call 911. Cell phone is available in concession stand. It is advisable for at least one coach to have working cell phone, especially for practices. No longer have land-line. Send someone to road to direct emergency personnel to injured. Have someone review Medical Release form for any important information/medical conditions. All head coaches must have copies of Medical Release forms with them at all team events.

  12. Treating Injuries Step #3 Evaluate Injury- Determine if player can be moved off field. Assess swelling Seek medical treatment if needed.

  13. Treating Injuries Step #4 Bruises Muscle pulls or strains Overuse Injuries Sprains Apply Ice Loosely wrap with cloth bandage, if area allows Elevate Rest injured part Seek medical advice, if necessary

  14. Treating Injuries Step #4 Fractures If you suspect a fracture, seek emergency medical assistance. Calm the person Immobilize injury cardboard is available Apply ice Do not: Attempt to straighten the broken bone Move without support to broken bone, best not to move Move joints above or below fracture Give liquids or food (may need surgery)

  15. Treating Injuries Step #4 Facial/Eye/Teeth Injuries Be certain person can hear, see or maintain balance If any doubt, seek emergency medical assistance. Calm the person Apply pressure to any wound, unless eye or you feel a loose bone Apply ice Save any extracted teeth, do not touch root. Keep tooth moist. Do not: Remove batting helmet Give liquids or food (may need surgery)

  16. Treating Injuries Step #4 Concussion Seek emergency medical assistance if any LOC, severe vomiting, confusion/agitation, seizure. Rest the person Apply Ice Advise family to monitor person for 24 hours Must be seen by physician and cleared to return to play, per WBLL policy

  17. Treating Injuries Step #4 Insect Bites and Stings Review medical information and be aware of any player with allergies to insect bites If player has difficulty breathing/nausea/increased heart rate/dizziness or LOC, seek emergency medical assistance. If only minor reaction to bite: Remove stinger with fingernail or tweezers Apply Ice Elevate area Medication to relieve pain is available in the concession stand

  18. Treating Injuries Step #4 Heat Illness Move person to cool place Loosen clothing Drink fluids (cool water) Put cool towels on back of neck, under arm pits or groin area If person is not sweating/LOC/seizure or other complications, seek emergency medical assistance.

  19. Treating Injuries Step #5 Turn over care Parents Urge parents to see a doctor if emergency care is not required Emergency medical assistance/ambulance Go with player if parents are not available Turn over team to assistant coach

  20. Treating Injuries Step #6 Report Accident Complete incident report form, found on little league website. Place in safety office mailbox at diamonds or email to Tara Schmidt. Contact Safety Officer, Tara Schmidt or league president, Jim D Angelo within 24 hours of incident. Contact information is on WBLL website and in ASAP Plan. Safety Officer will follow-up with family within 48 hours. Near misses can also be reported, use the same form.

  21. Treating Injuries Step #7 Require medical release Players are required to have medical clearance to return to play, if injury was a concussion. Medical clearance is highly recommended for all other injuries.

  22. Key Messages All coaches must review the ASAP plan and Infection Prevention plans, available on the WBLL website Take steps to prevent injury Report any accidents within 24 hours
