Funds for Equity-Seeking Groups Trans Fund Immediate and individualized form of support for members who self-identify as transgender Sexual and Domestic Violence Survivors Fund (Survivors Fund) Immediate and individualized form of support for members who are survivors of sexual and/or domestic violence International Workers Legal Fund (I.W.L.F.) Covers eligible legal expenses for members who are experiencing legal troubles related to their visa and/or immigration status that interfere with their ability to perform their Unit 1 work

Funds for Equity-Seeking Groups: the BASICS Fund Year & Application Dates Funding Caps May 1-April 30 Annual cap of $5,000/member Open year-round for applications Lifetime cap of $15,000/member Eligibility Criteria One hour of work in the fund year Political membership Self-identification as member of equity-seeking group

  6. Funds for Equity-Seeking Groups: Administration Funding requests and application details are anonymized by the Secretary Treasurer Applications reviewed on a rolling basis by New Funds Committee (NFC) Disbursements issued quickly after decisions made (in practice within two weeks)

  7. Childcare and Healthcare Funds

  8. Childcare and Healthcare Funds Childcare Financial Assistance Fund (C.F.A.F.) Covers members who have out-of-pocket childcare expenses. International Health Plan Assistance Fund (I.H.P.A.F.) Covers members who pay premiums out-of-pocket to enroll themselves or their dependents in U.H.I.P. University of Toronto Family Plan Assistance Fund (U.F.P.A.F.) Covers members who pay premiums out-of-pocket to enroll a spouse and/or children on a U of T student or postdoc plan.

Childcare and Healthcare Funds: the BASICS Fund Year & Application Dates Funding Caps May 1-April 30 Healthcare funds typically cover between 80% and 100% of relevant expenses; varies Healthcare funds open in February for applications Childcare fund typically covers around $3,000/child of relevant expenses; varies Childcare fund opens in May for applications Eligibility Criteria 30 hours of work in the fund year Political membership

  11. Funds to Improve the Funding Package Top-Up Fund (T.U.F.) Increases the minimum funding package for research masters and research stream doctoral students in the funded cohort. Research Assistants Defense Fund (R.A.D.F.) Covers members who are in the funded cohort in Divisions 1 & 2 and forced to undertake taxable RA work to receive the minimum funding package

Top-Up Fund and R.A.D.F.: the BASICS Fund Year & Application Dates Eligibility Criteria Sept 1-August 30 One hour of work in the fund year for top-up Open in November for regular applications (round 1): applications due January 17 30 hours of work in funded year for R.A.D.F. Political membership Research masters or research-stream doctoral student in the funded cohort Open in July for special circumstance applications (round 2) Funding Top-Up In the 2019-20 year, the fund guarantees to top-up all applicants to $18,000; varies

  13. Funds to Offset Tuition

  14. Funds to Offset Tuition Tuition Assistance Fund (T.A.F.) Reduces out of pocket tuition expenses for full-time research doctoral students who were funded and are now in unfunded years (i.e. without external awards or other sources). Unfunded Student Assistance Fund (U.S.A.F.) Reduces out of pocket tuition expenses for unfunded members, including undergrads, unfunded or post-funded research and professional Masters students, and D.M.A.s.

Tuition Assistance Fund: the BASICS Fund Year & Application Dates Tuition Offset Sept 1-August 30 The fund guarantees to reduce tuition for all applicants to a maximum of $2,800 out of pocket, varies Open in May for regular applications (round 1) Open in July for special circumstance applications (round 2) MAY be able to reduce tuition further. Eligibility Criteria One hour of work in the fund year Political membership Research doctoral students who were in the funded cohort and are now in unfunded years.

Unfunded Student Assistance Fund: the BASICS Fund Year & Application Dates Tuition Offset Sept 1-August 30 The first $1,000 of eligible members tuition-funding gap will be completely covered; varies Open in May for regular applications (round 1) Open in July for special circumstance applications (round 2) Eligibility Criteria 30 hours of work in the fund year Political membership Unfunded members, including undergrads, unfunded or post-funded research and

  17. Special Circumstances Rounds There will be a special circumstances round for the T.U.F., R.A.D.F., and T.A.F. in July. This round is only for members who did not become eligible for these funds until after the regular applications rounds closed. Eligible applicants in the special circumstances round will receive payments equivalent to those paid out in the regular rounds for the same year.

  18. Partially Funded Members Members who are funded for part of the academic year (September-August) are still eligible for the T.U.F. and R.A.D.F. Their payments will be prorated. Members who are post-funded or unfunded for part of the academic year are still eligible for the T.A.F. or U.S.A.F. Their payments will be prorated. Can be mixed through academic year.
