Session 5: Closing the gap the important role women can play in Vanuatus future economy How to shift attitudes and norms that prevent women from being perceived as legitimate leaders 1. Understand the context Melanesian society deeply rooted in a belief system that recognises men as the head of the home, decision maker and primary provider. Christian principles that speak to mutual respect, and submission to men s authority meaning they lead and women follow Both men and women aspire to these beliefs and social norms. Approaches that are non-threatening and non-confrontational, working with the grain

Effective change comes from evidence of success Evidence that the benefits are true Evidence that when a woman is leading and making those decisions, there is a better representation of all voices, therefore better for society as a whole, Empowered women can contribute more meaningfully
