Creating a Culture for Mission Peninsula Gospel Partnership
Dean Flemming Recovering the Full Mission of God Mission is more than one activity of the church among others. We cannot equate the church's mission with instigating an evangelistic outreach program, supporting overseas missionaries, running an inner-city soup kitchen, or combating human trafficking, as worthy as such activities may be. These are merely concrete expressions of something that runs much deeper. We don't simply do Mission. Mission is who we are. We are a people called by God for the sake of the world. The church s being is inseparable from its mission. This basic missional identity integrates everything we say and do as a church.
Lesslie Newbigin the very general belief of Christians in most churches .. that the church can exist without being a mission involves a radical contradiction of the truth of the Church s being.
Van Gelder The Ministry of the Missional church The Spirit led church s very existence in the world has to be understood in missionary terms. The church cannot help but participate in God's mission in the world. This is part of what it means to be the church. To do less would be contrary to its nature.
Is the church praying regularly and passionately for the salvation of the lost? Do church members share the good news frequently with unbelievers? Do they love the lost? Do they have a global vision? Is the church seeing conversions? Are there baptisms? Is discipleship an on-going commitment?
1. What the Bible teaches about evangelism. It is somewhat surprising that the New Testament contains relatively few exhortations for ordinary believers to speak the gospel to others. (Trellis and the Vine; p49)
1. People gifts to the church - Eph.4:11. It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers 2. Philip the Evangelist - Acts 21:8. 3. 2 Tim.4:5. As leader of the church, Timothy was to publicly proclaim the gospel do the work of an evangelist .
Colossians 4:2-6. Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
1 Pet.3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
