  2. MISSION: Book of Discipline 120. The Mission The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Local churches and extension ministries of the Church provide the most significant arenas through which disciple-making occurs. Focus on this the rest will work out! Church Leadership and Administration all come down to facilitating this mission we have in the world how will your local church live it out?

  4. ADMINISTRATIVELY ORGANIZED FOR MISSION Local Church Charge Conferences District Conferences Annual Conferences Jurisdictional Conferences & Central Conferences General Conference

  5. THE LOCAL CHURCH Charge Conferences Local Church Organization can be different from church to church Basic Requirements ( 244) Finance Nominations Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee Trustees

  6. FINANCE (258.4) Duties and Oversight Coordinate budget process Receive money from offerings and other sources, using best practices (financial secretary) Disburse money, including apportionment payments and clergy salary

  7. FINANCE (258.4) Provide for an annual audit Provide financial reporting to Council/Board and members May include stewardship/pledge campaign Does NOT decide how money is to be spent that comes from Council, Leadership Team, however it is set up

  8. NOMINATIONS AND LAY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ( 258.1) Description and function Chaired by the pastor Identify and develop leaders Support leaders through prayer, training, affirmation Membership divided into 3 class years

STAFF/PASTOR-PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE ( 258.2) Function and elements Supports and advises clergy and staff Makes salary and CEU recommendations Evaluates clergy (twice annually), including Annual Preference Communicates and interprets the role of the pastor to the congregation Lay Servant approval and renewal Identifies potential candidates for ordained/licensed ministry Parsonage review (w/trustees)

  10. TRUSTEES (258.3, 2525-2551) Duties Property matters, including parsonage and personal property Carries out function under direction of the Charge Conference Localities have their own guidelines for registering trustees with the court always check in to obtain these

  11. TRUSTEES (258.3, 2525-2551) Pastor may call meetings One exception to quorum rule needs to be a majority present for binding decisions May not interfere with pastor in use of property for worship, meetings, etc. Shares annual parsonage review with SPRC Pastor is not typically a voting member

ONE BOARD OR SIMPLIFIED ACCOUNTABLE STRUCTURE Combines many/all of these committees into one Board You may enter a system that is already structured this way ask your District for help in understanding how this works You may want to consider this for your church read Mission Possible by Kay Kotan and Blake Bradford Pros and Cons to this newer model

THE CONNECTION Connections to other local UMC s and pastors Connections to other churches and pastors outside the UMC Connections to local nonprofits, agencies, schools and governmental agencies like police and firefighters Connects to the District Connections to the Conference Connections to the Denomination
