  6. Federal Business/ Industry Foundations Funding Sources State/ Local Professional Associations

  7. First Three years of Graduate School: New Graduate Student Fellowships (NGFs) Characterized by: Yearly stipend, tuition and health insurance coverage, possible international travel funding. Some Common Agencies: The Ford Foundation Predoctoral, NSF GRFP, NDSEG, Hertz

  8. Preparation: Must apply for NGFs during first couple months of graduate school Short essays: 1-3 months of editing Letters of reference New Graduate Student Prestigious Fellowship Workshop

  9. Throughout Graduate School: Travel funding* Research funding grants* Awards and Conferences* *Funding for these needs is available through both internal and external sources

  10. Preparation: a minimum of three months join professional associations immediately familiarize yourself with departmental endowment grants, the graduate school, and the GPSA begin searching through pivot.cos.com application procedures vary

  11. Throughout Graduate School: Internships* Research Assistantship (RA) Teaching Assistantship (TA)* *Funding for these needs is available through both internal and external sources

  12. Preparation: GA, RA, TA- Check with your department Call through the list of opportunities on the graduate school website Check with departments that you received great grades in as an undergraduate Contact Hannah Merley (me) Internship- Check external and internal sources

  13. Dissertation Funding: Many different types: Dissertation Planning Dissertation Research Dissertation Writing A Mix Characterized by: Funding for either research or stipend or both (check requirements), may include travel/a variety of expenditures in budget

  14. Preparation: One year of writing and editing!!! Letters of reference Lengthy, 20+ page, single-spaced proposal 6 pages of references Approved budget (remember your departmental contact from the first couple slides!) There are many sources of dissertation funding and you may be able to apply for more than one. You should start looking now.

  15. Postdoctoral Fellowships: Very similar to graduate student fellowships, except there are more of them, and thus, they are more subject specific. Start your search now!

  16. Preparation: a minimum of three months curriculum vitae short summary of research interests letters of reference

  17. Throughout your career as a graduate student and a faculty member: Prestigious Scholarships- such as Fulbright, Boren, Pickering, and Rhodes Characterized by: Stipend to live in another country and teach, do research, or even just learn another language.

USE SEARCH RESULTS TO CREATE A TIMELINE BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF TIME IT TAKES TO APPLY TO AND THE SPECIFIC, CYCLICAL FUNDING DEADLINES FOR THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR WHICH YOU ARE QUALIFIED Example: 1stsemester- apply to Ford, NSF, and NDSEG new graduate fellowships 2nd semester- apply to internal endowment grants and the GPSA research grant, revise failed fellowship proposals 3rd -4thsemester- apply to travel funding and NIH fellowship 5th semester- begin working on dissertation proposal 8th semester- revise failed dissertation proposal
