Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a weak acid with both oxidant and reductant properties. It is an unstable compound that decomposes into oxygen and water. This experiment involves titrating hydrogen peroxide against a standard oxidizing agent solution to determine its concentration. The physical and chemical properties, pharmaceutical applications, and preparation methods of hydrogen peroxide are detailed in the procedure. The assay is performed by diluting H2O2, adding sulfuric acid, and titrating with potassium permanganate in an acidic medium.

  1. Exp. No. 4 Assay of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2)

  2. Introduction Physical properties Chemical properties Pharmaceutical application Chemical principle Procedure Calculation

  3. INTRODUCTION : Hydrogen peroxide is one of weak acids have formula ( H2O2) with M.wt = 34.02 gm/mol , Hydrogen peroxide has both oxidant and reductant properties , Hydrogen peroxide is an unstable compound , The process decomposes (H2O2) to oxygen and water is hastened by illumination . 2H2O2 Preparation 1-From Barium peroxide a- BaO2 + H2SO4 b- BaO2+ CO2+ H2O BaCO3 2- From Sodium peroxide : Na2O2+ H2SO4 Light 2H2O + O2 BaSO4+ H2O2 + H2O2 Na2SO4 + H2O2

  4. Physical properties 1- Colorless, odorless and bitter taste liquid. 2- The boiling point of H2O2 is 150.2 C . 3- It is miscible with water but soluble in ether. 4- Stable by add small a mounted (H2SO4) and (H3PO4).

  5. Chemical properties 1- Decomposition into H2O and O2 2H2O2 2 H2O + O2 2- Hydrogen peroxide has both oxidant and reductant properties. 6. Pharmaceutical application 1- Use as Hair lightening and has deodorant properties . 2-Antimicrobial agent due to liberated (O2) . 3- Used for disinfecting wounds and ulcers (6%). 4-Solution (1.5%) used as mouth wash . 5-Used for tooth whitening. 6-It is used as ear- drops for removal of wax.

  7. Hydrogen peroxide is reducing agent and oxidizing agent ,To assay Hydrogen peroxide titration against standard oxidizing agent solution (KMnO4) in acidic medium . 2KMnO4+5H2O2+3H2SO4 K2SO4+2MnSO4+8H2O+5O2

  8. 1- Dilute (1 ml) of H2O2to (20ml) water. 2- Take the dilute solution and add (5 ml) of sulfuric acid. 3-Titrate with (0.1N) potassium permanganate.

  9. 1- Calculate the normality of Hydrogen peroxide solution . 2- Calculate the quantity of Hydrogen peroxide in your sample .
