  4. Background of Sports at the College Level in Jamaica Collegiate Sports is governed by Jamaica Intercollegiate Association which was established in 1961. The Association consists of over 21 member institutions from across the island. The Jamaica Intercollegiate Association is the national governing body for collegiate level sports in Jamaica and is affiliated with the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Inter-Collegiate Sports Championships are held over a period of two semesters.

  7. What does a good school sport program look like? What does a good school sport program look like? (Department of Education and Development, Melbourne, Victoria, 2009) C: Challenging as an enrichment activity M: Mixed level of student engaging activities O: Provide opportunities to develop social competences and problem solving W: Generate a level of wellbeing, encompassing fitness and enjoyment of physical activity E: Good sports programs are enjoyable R: Foster resilience and appreciation of achievements S: Safe and conducted by trained staff S: Developed in sequence and increments and evaluated regularly to allow for the gradual acquisition and application of skills.

Research Design Purposive sampling was used to select sport administrators from 4 tertiary institutions in Jamaica: 2 community colleges, 1 teachers college 1 college of sport in Jamaica All institutions represented had established sport programs Qualitative data was obtained through interviews.

  9. Research Method Qualitative data was analyzed to find out emerging themes using the constant comparative method. In this procedure, emerging and recurrent themes were then identified.

  10. An effective sport program: From the data obtained, these were the major themes which the participants believed makes an effective sports program: Leadership support- Principal needs to buy into the program Financial Support- Sponsorship Technical Support- Through qualified and trained sporting staff Physical support- Proper infrastructure Modern facility and adequate equipment Support of Stakeholders Caters to the wellbeing and development of the athlete Scholarship program Tutoring program Sport nutrition program Sport psychology program Sports Physiology program Create an athlete s profile All inclusive Includes recreational and competitive sporting options for student Has a wide range of sporting options for athletes from which to choose

An effective sport program: Establish a website of sports program- build fan base and provide recruitment opportunities Diversifies enrolment Creates student exchange Creates future linkages and networking opportunity Properly marketed A good Athletes and coaches should have a respectful communication climate Coaches and sporting staff should communicate to athletes schedule of events in a timely manner communication system
