  1. Active v Passive Voice

  2. Definition In a sentence written in the active voice, the subject of sentence performs the action. In a sentence written in the passive voice the subject receives the action. Active: Harry ate six shrimp at dinner. Passive: At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by Harry.

  3. Two Ways to Fix Passive Voice 1. Look for a by phrase. If you find one, the sentence may be in the passive voice. Rewrite the sentence so that the subject buried in the by clause is closer to the beginning of the sentence. 2. If the subject of the sentence is somewhat anonymous, see if you can use a general term, such as researchers, or the study, or experts in this field.

  4. Change to Active Voice 1. The man was bitten by the snake. 2. It was earlier demonstrated that heart attacks can be caused by high stress. 3. The metropolis has been scorched by the dragon s fiery breath. 4. We were invited by our neighbors to attend their party. 5. It was determined by the committee that the report was inconclusive.
