  1. NHS People Plan Leadership: Our NHS Way Holding a Leadership position in the NHS is both a privilege and responsibility. We need to ensure that all parties behave towards each other with compassion, openness, transparency, reasonableness and civility, respecting each other's specific roles, expertise and experience. As senior leaders, we agree that when we work together in this way, our patients, service users and staff have the best experience of the NHS. Our behaviour demonstrates equality, diversity and inclusion. The NHS does not permit discrimination towards patients and service users or each other. We are all accountable for our own behaviours and challenge unacceptable behaviour in others When we say we will do something we do it Find out more Find out more Find out more We are proud to celebrate our success and give support where it is needed We show professionalism and work together for our common purpose Find out more Find out more Leaders in local organisations and local health systems will use NHS resources to achieve continuous improvements in quality of care and health outcomes. National organisations will provide direction and support, including analysis and insights, good practice and facilitate peer learning. Where local organisations are not delivering as expected, they will seek support and be accountable for developing and implementing improvements.

  2. Find out more Takes to to this text Discriminating behaviour in all its forms has no place in the NHS. Our behaviour demonstrates equality, diversity and inclusion. The NHS does not permit discrimination towards patients and service users or each other. Indicators We are not complacent. We proactively learn about what discrimination is and how it is felt by those experiencing it within the NHS We can be trusted to value difference, respect lived experience and demonstrate that we work inclusively. We seek and value feedback, listen and take positive steps to change our behaviour if we have excluded others. We are allies. We visibly support staff who speak up about their experiences of discrimination. We all role model inclusive leadership by seeking out and promoting the voices of those affected by discrimination. We intervene if attitudes and behaviours do not support inclusion, regardless of the seniority of who is demonstrating those attitudes or behaviours. We proactively build our capabilities to eliminate discrimination based on the evidence of what works. We take corrective action, when our staff do not experience equality, our organisations are not diverse or inclusion is not practised.

  3. Find out more We are all accountable for our own behaviours and challenge unacceptable behaviour in others Indicators We all accept responsibility for how we act, owning our actions and their consequences individually and collectively. We create emotionally safe environments so that open and honest conversations about any issue can happen without fear. We acknowledge that our work and that of others can be stressful. We treat everyone with compassion, respect, civility and kindness irrespective of who they are and what they do. We value open debate, but do this respectfully and calmly. Intimidation, abuse or bullying in word or action is totally unacceptable. We develop our self-awareness, proactively seek feedback on our behaviour and give feedback to others with confidence. We take positive steps to change our behaviour when needed, and help others do the same. We are consistent and communicate the same views publicly and privately.

  4. Find out more When we say we will do something we do it Indicators We take responsibility for ensuring we understand what is asked of us, and check others understand what we ask of them. We are visible as leaders. We listen, and engage with our staff, each other and with patients and service users, so that we find out what matters to them and what concerns they have. We co-create realistic plans. We accept circumstances change and are honest in communicating this in a consistent and transparent manner to those affected. If we or others - don t succeed we own our part in this and take time to understand the circumstances. We presume positive intent. When things go wrong, we act in accordance with guidance on Fair and Just Culture and implement learning from what has gone wrong. We support people to develop and progress in line with their aspirations, readiness and potential so they perform safely and effectively in their role and are motivated to continue their career within the NHS
