Discussions at the workshop highlighted challenges in coordination, resources, capacity, and policy frameworks for interdisciplinary research. The importance of ongoing stakeholder engagement, prioritization, funding, and the use of local versus international research data was emphasized. The way forward involves completing revisions, expanding stakeholder engagement, setting priorities, and strategic planning for dissemination.

  1. National Workshop on Planning for the GEOHealth Hub for Interdisciplinary Research and Training The Way Forward? Jonathan M. Samet Department of Preventive Medicine University of Southern California

  2. What I heard A familiar discussion Not enough: Coordination Resources Capacity Data Policy frameworks in place; implementation is not Priority setting

  3. What I have learned A SANA can never be finished! Another study is always coming and published. There are always more stakeholders to contact! There are inherent conflicts and differing perceptions. But, a SANA can be useful

  4. Of course: The solution is: Funding, funding, funding People, people, people Research, research, research Data, data, data

  5. Local Research vs International Research Many research gaps identified by the SANA process On some topics there is research from neighboring countries and elsewhere How should research from elsewhere be used? When are local data needed, particularly for policy?

  6. The Way Forward: Completing the SANA Revisions after this meeting Corrections to the document Recommended areas for expansion Further stakeholder engagement Approaches to priority setting Post for comments (geohealth.org) Dissemination planning Stakeholders General public

  7. Setting Priorities Barriers Lack of data Competing agendas within and across themes No clear framework for setting priorities Agendas may logically differ by stakeholder group Approaches Stakeholder processes Strategic interagency agenda Collaborative networks Expert reports

  8. One US Model: National Research Council s PM Committee

  9. Research Progress on Environmental, Health, and Safety Aspects of Engineered Nanomaterials pre-release draft Committee to Develop a Research Strategy for Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Aspects of Engineered Nanomaterials (ENMs)

  10. Can the SANA and GeoHealth Hub Process Help in Priotizing? SANA lays a foundation for moving forward. Should approaches for priority setting be examined in the second year of funding? Reviewed in a stakeholder process? Critical to identify one or more approaches that will be effective. There are many models.
