  1. Who Is Jesus? Who Is Jesus? Jesus Is LORD Jesus Is CHRIST Jesus Is Savior

  2. The Son of God? Only Begotten

  3. I will surely tell of the decree of Yahweh: He said to Me, You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. (Psalm 2:7 LSB) No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. (John 1:18 LSB) For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16 LSB) but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:31 LSB) But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, (Galatians 4:4 LSB)

  4. The Son The Son of God There is no doubt this title is connected to Deity (Jn 10:35-39) God acknowledged it (Matt 3:17; 17:5) Satan acknowledged it (Matt 4:3,6) Demons acknowledged it (Matt 8:29) Men acknowledged it (Matt 27:54; Acts 8:37) The Scriptures confirm it (Mk 1:1; Jn 20:31) Jesus Acknowledged that He was the Only Begotten Son of God (Jn 3:16-18)...

  5. The Son The Son of God Important Questions How long has Jesus been the only begotten Son of God? Does this title refer to His Eternal Sonship/Eternal Generation If not, when did He become the only begotten Son of God? What does the Old Testament teach? How long will Jesus be the only begotten Son of God? What does only begotten mean?

  6. The Son Past Teachings or Beliefs Church Fathers

  7. Jesus Christ is the only proper Son who has been begotten by God, being his Word and first-begotten, and power; and, becoming man according to his will, he taught us these things for the conversion and restoration of the human race Justin Martyr: (First Apology 23 [A.D. 151]). God begot before all creatures a beginning, who was a certain rational power from himself and whom the Holy Spirit calls . . . sometimes the Son . . . sometimes Lord and Word. . . We see things happen similarly among ourselves, for whenever we utter some word, we beget a word, yet not by any cutting off, which would diminish the word in us when we utter it. We see a similar occurrence when one fire enkindles another. It is not diminished through the enkindling of the other, but remains as it was (Dialogue with Trypho the Jew 61 [A.D. 155]).

  8. The Son Past Teachings or Beliefs Creeds Council of Nicaea I We believe . . . in our one Lord Jesus Christ the Son of God, the only-begotten born of the Father, that is, of the substance of the Father, God of God, light of light, true God of true God, begotten, not made (The Creed of Nicaea [A.D. 325]) Council of Constantinople I.. We believe . . . in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, light of light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father (The Nicene Creed [A.D. 381]) .

  9. The Son Past Teachings or Beliefs Creeds Council of Constantinople II If anyone does not confess that there are two generations of the Word of God, one from the Father before all ages, without time and incorporeally, the other in the last days when the same came down from heaven and was incarnate . . . let such a one be anathema (Anathemas Concerning the Three Chapters, canon 2 [A.D. 553])

  10. The Son Past Teachings or Beliefs Creeds Westminster Confession of Faith "In the unity of the Godhead there be three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost: the Father is of none, neither begotten, not proceeding; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; the Holy Ghost eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son." (WCF II.3)

  11. Subordinationism- is an heretical view that God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are not merely relationally subordinate to God the Father, but also subordinate in nature and being R C Kroeger and C C Kroeger, Elwell Evangelical Dictionary

  12. The Son The Son of God How Was Sonship Understood? Son of expressions in the Bible were not always used to express the origin or lineage of an individual, but their character, nature, and attributes. The Son/Sons of Sons of wickedness (Psa 89:22) Sons of affliction (Prov 31:5) 1 sons of affliction Sons of death (1 Sam 26:16) 1 sons of death Son of Perdition (Jn 17:12) Sons of disobedience (Eph 2:2; 5:6; Col 3:6) Sons of light/Sons of the day (1 Thess 5:5) Sons of God (Gen 6:2; Job 1:6)

  13. The Son The Son of God Father/Son Perspective: In order to understand the Sonship perspective it is imperative that we understand the Father perspective as well Genealogical (Matt 3:9; Jn 8:39, 53, 56-59) and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, We have Abraham for our father ; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. (Matthew 3:9 LSB) They answered and said to Him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said to them, If you are Abraham s children, you would do the deeds of Abraham. (John 8:39 LSB) Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be? (John 8:53 LSB)

  14. The Son The Son of God Father/Son Perspective: In order to understand the Sonship perspective it is imperative that we understand the Father perspective as well Spiritually (Rom 9:6-8; Rom 4:13; Gal 3:16; 29) But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; nor are they all children because they are Abraham s seed, but: THROUGH ISAAC YOUR SEED WILL BE NAMED. That is, the children of the flesh are not the children of God, but the children of the promise are considered as seed. (Romans 9:6 8 LSB) For the promise to Abraham or to his seed that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. (Romans 4:13 LSB)

  15. Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, And to seeds, as referring to many, but rather to one, And TO YOUR SEED, that is, Christ. (Galatians 3:16 LSB) And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s seed, heirs according to promise. (Galatians 3:29 LSB)

  16. The Son The Son of God Jesus: The Only Begotten Son of God What does only begotten mean? monogene s, to being the only one of its kind within a specific relationship, one and only; to being the only one of its kind or class, unique (in kind) (BDAG) (Heb 11:17) Adam was the only man of his kind and is called the son of God (Lk 3:38 Cf Gen 1:26; 5:1,*3) Jesus is the only one called The Only Begotten Son of God (Col 1:15; Jn 14:9) Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. (Colossians 1:15 LSB) Jesus said to him, Have I been with you all so long and have you not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, Show us the Father ? (John 14:9 LSB)

  17. The Son The Son of God Jesus The Only Begotten Son of God It was understood that Jesus was affirming His deity by calling Himself Son (Jn 5:17-23) New Testament writers also affirmed this fact

  18. Have this way of thinking in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although existing in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a slave, by being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God also highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that EVERY TONGUE WILL CONFESS that Jesus Christ is LORD, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:5 11 LSB)

  19. In this way also Christ did not glorify Himself to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU ; just as He says also in another passage, YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK. He, in the days of His flesh, offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, (Hebrews 5:5 9 LSB)

  20. The Son The Problems With the Concept of Eternal Sonship What about passages that state Jesus was given a certain purpose (Matt 11:27; 28:18; Jn 5:22,27; Rom 14:9; Eph 1:20-22; Col 2:9-10) All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. (Matthew 11:27 LSB) And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (Matthew 28:18 LSB)

  21. The Son The Problems With the Concept of Eternal Sonship What about passages that state Jesus was given a certain purpose (Matt 11:27; 28:18; Jn 5:22,27; Rom 14:9; Eph 1:20-22; Col 2:9-10) For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, (John 5:22 LSB) and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. (John 5:27 LSB) which He worked in Christ, by raising Him from the dead and seating Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And HE PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, (Ephesians 1:20 22 LSB)

  22. For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells bodily, and in Him you have been filled, who is the head over all rule and authority; (Colossians 2:9 10 LSB)

  23. The Son Psalm 2:7 I will surely tell of the decree of Yahweh: He said to Me, You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. (Psalm 2:7 LSB) that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU. (Acts 13:33 LSB) For to which of the angels did He ever say, YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU ? And again, I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME ? (Hebrews 1:5 LSB) In this way also Christ did not glorify Himself to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU (Hebrews 5:5 LSB)

  24. which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, who was designated as the Son of God in power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, (Romans 1:2 4 LSB)

  25. The Son 1 Corinthians 15:23-24, 28 Is this verse teaching eternal Sonship? The Son will deliver the kingdom to the Father (vs 24) Then the Son will be subject to God (vs. 28) What about what was said previously (1 Cor 11:2-3) Jesus spoke of a relationship He had with the Father before the world was (Jn 17:1-5 Cf 1:1-3,14 Cf 5:26)...

  26. The Son What About For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6 LSB) that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the full knowledge of Him, (Ephesians 1:17 LSB)

  27. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. (John 1:1 3 LSB) And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14 LSB)

  28. Who Is Jesus? The Only Begotten Son of God

  29. Who Is Jesus? Jesus Is LORD Jesus Is CHRIST Jesus Is Savior Jesus In Son

  30. just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him in love, by predestining us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, (Ephesians 1:4 5 LSB)
