Understanding the Antichrist and Abiding in Truth: The Message to Children of God

WAR N IN G C ON C ER N IN G AN T IC HR IS T S 2 :18 - 2 6 18 18Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.19 they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.20 by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.21 the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.22 who denies that Jesus is the Christ? TRUTHS FROM THE PREVIOUS SECTION (18) We are living in the last days. But the ultimate Last Day remains. (24) John tells his audience to abide, or remain in the teaching they received. (18) Antichrist is coming, but many antichrist are already here (25) if they remain the teaching they will have eternal life. (20) Christians have been anointed by the Holy One. (26-27) John is battling the lies of false teachers: a follower of Jesus could still be a child of God and live like a son of Satan. (27) John combines his two themes of anointing (being regenerated and illuminated by the Holy Spirit) and abiding (not straying from the truth). One must abide to receive eternal life, and one who is truly anointed will truly abide. (23) No one gets to the Father but through the Son.

SUMMARY: Abiding means living out our confession of faith. Practicing righteousness means living out our new birth. Both are necessary for confidence at Christ s return.

K N OW IN G YO U R ID EN T IT Y C HAN G ES EVERY T HIN G : When the world is falling apart, as it seems to be today, your future is secure because your Father is in charge. When your life is a mess, you ultimately aren t defined by your circumstances because your identity as God s child means that everything is working out for your good. When health is deteriorating you can know that God has promised to give his children eternal life, and it s his love-gift to them.
KNOWING YOUR IDENTIT Y CHANGES EVERY THING PT. 2: When mental health is a crisis you can know that God loves you as are and knew what he was getting into when he adopted you. He will give you peace now (Phil 4:6-8). He will help you heal, change, and ultimately give you a new mind at the return of Jesus. When money is a problem, you can know that your Heavenly Father is your provider. Jesus said in Matt. 6: 31-33 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Next time your having a moment realize that in that moment you are God s Child and let that truth empower you to change or to heal.

REVIEW AND APPLICATION 1. Daily see what kind of love it takes for a perfect God to give up his perfect Son for imperfect people like us. (3:1) 2. Know that you are God s child now (3:1-2). 3. Let the primary identity of being God s child be your anchor when life s storms come. 4. Let the primary identity of being God s child be your starting point for thinking. 5. Let your relationship as child of God drive you to prayer: What a man is on his knees before God, that he is, and nothing more. Robert Murray McCheyne. 6. Live a pure life since your savior is pure.
