Forgiveness Forgiveness 1. What is Forgiveness? a) Forgiveness is a command not an option Ephesians 4:32 (Bible) Be kind & compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you b) Forgiveness is a decision, not a feeling
c) Forgiveness leads to healing Job 5:2 (Bible-GN) To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing to do. Job 18:4 (Bible-GN) You are only hurting yourself with your anger. Job 21:23-25 (Bible-GN) Some men stay healthy, until the day they die others have no happiness at all, they live & die with bitter hearts.
Luke 6:27,28 Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you I Cor. 13:5 (Bible-NIV) Love keeps no record of wrong. Un-forgiveness will only hurt your own self.
d) Forgiveness is unilateral. Romans 5:6-10 when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly While we were still sinners, Christ died for us when we were God s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his son
Forgiving is NOT E Minimizing the seriousness of the offence. E Instant restoration of trust. E Resuming the relationship without any changes. E Condoning (authorising the wrong act) E Forgetting E Pretending to be nice E Letting people off the hook E Magic but it requires hard work, it is time consuming, and it takes a while.
Forgiveness can be learned E Begin with the realization of your own mistakes and sins. E Consider the pain of not being forgiven for our mistakes and sins. E Realize that what you expect from others, should be given to others by you. E Extend that same attitude to those who have offended you. E Forgiveness frees you to enjoy life again and is well worth the investment.
Romans 12:19 (Bible-LB) Never avenge yourself. Leave that to God, for he said that he will repay those who deserve it. e) Forgiveness is like a river that flows from God, through me, to others.
Matthew 6:15 (Bible-NIV) For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your father will not forgive your sins. Un-forgiveness leads me to the torturers Un-forgiveness leads me into a prison Un-forgiveness brings me into bondage.
f) Forgiveness reflects the nature of God Psalms 86:5 You are forgiving & good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you.
Forgiveness is ERenouncing resentment / revenge as a solution ECancelling debt EPardoning the offender & not punishing them EA choice, yes, a difficult but a right choice
2. How to forgive? a) Prepare to do business with God. b) Make an invoice. c) Count the cost of releasing them. d) Have mercy on them. e) Forgive and release them for each & every incident. f) Bless them g) Ask God to forgive you for your un-forgiveness.
Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you.
h) Get the person(s) with you to pray healing into your life James 5:16 Therefore confess yours sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
i) Tear up the invoice Refocus Job 11:13-16 (Bible-LB) Put your heart right, reach out to God then face the world again, firm & courageous. Then all your troubles will fade from your memory, like floods that are past & remembered no more.
