  1. Tuesday 9thFebruary MATHS This week s focus: Length and height

  2. Key teaching points for teaching length and height. Key Concepts Children will begin by using language to describe length and height, e.g. the tree is tall, the pencil is short. When making direct comparisons, they may initially say something is bigger than something else. You need to encourage them to use more specific mathematical vocabulary relating to length (longer, shorter), height (taller, shorter), and breadth (wider, narrower) Encourage the children to make indirect comparisons using objects such as pens or lego blocks to measure items. E.g. The table is 8 pens long. The book is 2 pens long. The book is shorter than the table.

  11. Todays Maths Challenge Today s maths challenge is going to follow the pattern of the last couple of lessons. The next slide will model to you first the skill you will be teaching your child to do in today s lesson. The following slides will give you a chance to practise the skill and then you can choose with your child which independent task they would like to try and do linked to the skill which has been taught. You can choose all 3 challenges or the one which best suits the ability of your child. The challenges will be called: The red bear challenge, which will be the simplest challenge if you feel your child when talking through the practise slides, found the work quite challenging. The yellow bear challenge, which will be for children who had developing confidence when working on the practise slides. The green bear challenge, which will be for the children who grasped the practise slide skills really quickly and need their learning to be extended. .

  12. Todays skill.. Today you are going to be using the words tallest and shortest, just like you have been doing while you were helping Mystery Mouse find the correct super hero. .

  13. Todays skill.. Ask your child to find 3 toys. Put them next to each other. Ask your child to point to the tallest toy and then to the shortest toy. Next ask them to put the toys in order of size from the tallest to the smallest.

  14. Choose your maths Challenge! Depending on how you managed with learning to use the correct language of tallest and shortest, decide which challenge you would like to do today as your independent task. The Red Bear Challenge You found using the correct language and finding objects quite tricky and you need a little more practise. The Yellow Bear Challenge You managed to use the correct language and find objects do just with a little bit of help. The Green Bear Challenge You feel really confident with today s work and want to be challenged!

  15. THE RED BEAR CHALLENGE! After finding 3 objects and saying which is the tallest and which is the shortest. Choose one of the toys. Ask your child to find another toy that is taller than the toy you have chosen and one that is shorter than the same toy. Encourage them to say this toy is taller and this toy is shorter . .

  16. THE YELLOW BEAR CHALLENGE! After finding 3 objects and saying which is the tallest and which is the shortest. Ask your child to find 4 more toys. Can they then put them in the correct order from tallest to shortest with the other toys? Ask them which is the tallest and which is the shortest. Encourage them to say this toy is the tallest and this toy is shortest . .

  17. THE GREEN BEAR CHALLENGE! After finding 3 objects and saying which is the tallest and which is the shortest. Ask your child to find 4 more toys. Can they then put them in the correct order from tallest to shortest with the other toys? Ask them which is the tallest and which is the shortest. Encourage them to say this toy is the tallest and this toy is shortest . Now with a ruler or tape measure show your child how we use them to measure things carefully. Make sure you round up to the nearest whole number. What do they notice about the numbers as you measure the taller toys? .
