NORTHAMPTON Bible Study Weekend 26th 28thAugust 2022 SESSION FIVE Confidence in Death II Timothy Chapter 4
PAULS FINAL CHARGE (II Timothy 4:1-5) Before God and the Lord Jesus Christ (v 1) who will judge the living and the dead (v 1) All things are naked and open unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do (Hebrews 4:13) Thou God seest me (Genesis 16:13)
PAULS FINAL CHARGE (II Timothy 4:1-5) The Waiting His appearing and His kingdom (v 1) abide in Him, that when He shall appear we may not be ashamed before Him at His coming (I John 2:28) The Word Preach the word! (v 2) convince, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and teaching (v 2) The Willingness Be ready in season and out of season (v 2) that you may know how you ought to answer each one (Colossians 4:6)
PAULS FINAL CHARGE (II Timothy 4:1-5) The Waywardness They will not endure sound doctrine (v 3) They shall turn away their ears from the truth, and be turned aside to fables (v 4) The Watching You be watchful in all things (v 5) The Working endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry (v 5)
PAULS FINISHED COURSE (II Timothy 4:6-8) HIS PRESENT (v 6) He is Ready I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand (v 6) Death held no fear for Paul Having a desire to depart and be with Christ which is far better (Philippians 1:23) We are confident, yes, well-pleased, rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord (II Corinthians 5:8) For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21)
PAULS FINISHED COURSE (II Timothy 4:6-8) HIS PAST (v 7) He was Committed His Fighting I have fought a (the) good fight (v 7) Endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ (2:3) His Finishing I have finished my course (v 7) He had pressed toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14) His Faithfulness I have kept the faith (v 7)
PAULS FINISHED COURSE (II Timothy 4:6-8) HIS FUTURE (v 8) He would be Rewarded There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing (v 8) The Rewards: Five Crowns Crown of Righteousness (II Timothy 4:8) Those who look for His appearing Crown of Glory (I Peter 5:4) Those who shepherd and care for other believers Crown of Life (James 1:12) Those who maintained their love for the Lord despite severe trials Crown of Rejoicing (I Thessalonians 2:19) Those who have led others to Christ Incorruptible Crown (I Corinthians 9:25) Those who kept the old nature in subjection
SOME OF PAULS FRIENDS II Timothy 4:9-15 TIMOTHY Inspiration He was Paul s Son in the faith dearly beloved son (1:2) He was Paul s Companion him would Paul have to go with him (Acts 16:3) I have no man like-minded (Philippians 2:20) DEMAS Deviation Demas my fellow-worker (Philemon 24) Demas (with no comment) (Colossians 4:14) Demas has forsaken me having loved this present world (v 10) CRESCENS/TITUS Occupation Both examples of involvement in the Lord s work Paul had sent Crescens to Galatia Titus to Dalmatia (v 10)
SOME OF PAULS FRIENDS II Timothy 4:9-15 LUKE Continuation The beloved physician (Colossians 4:14) Only Luke is with me (v 11) MARK Restoration Proof that with God, FAILURE is not FINAL He had been a failure on Paul s first missionary journey (Acts 13:5,13) Bring him with you for he is profitable to me for the ministry (v 11)
SOME OF PAULS FRIENDS II Timothy 4:9-15 TYCHICUS Acceptation Paul is asking Timothy to accept Tychicus to help him with the Lord s work in Ephesus (v 12) In Colossians: Relationship beloved brother Reliability a faithful minister Responsibility fellow-servant of the Lord (Colossians 4:7) CARPUS Preservation Paul had left certain belongings with him at Troas (v 13) He knew that Carpus would safely look after them ALEXANDER Opposition He opposed Paul and the gospel did me much harm (v 14) Warning: May the Lord reward him according to his works (v 14)
LAST RECORDED WORDS (II Timothy 4:16-22) His Power The Lord stood with me and strengthened me (v 17) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13) His Preaching so that the message might be fully preached through me and that all the Gentiles might hear (v 17) His Preservation I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion (v 17) The Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom (v 18)
