Decisional preaching, as described by Dr. Jim Shaddix, emphasizes the vital role of Spirit-empowered preaching in calling all listeners, believers and unbelievers, to respond positively to the Gospel truth. This approach navigates the tension between divine sovereignty and human responsibility, recognizing the mystery and harmony in God's plan of salvation. Drawing insights from key biblical passages, it underscores the importance of both God's sovereign work in salvation and human response to His grace.

  1. DECISIONAL PREACHING DR. JIM SHADDIX SOUTHEASTERN BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

  2. DECISIONAL PREACHING WHAT IS IT? WHY DO WE DO IT? HOW DO WE DO IT?

  3. DECISIONAL PREACHING: WHAT IS IT? DECISIONAL PREACHING IS SPIRIT-EMPOWERED PREACHING THAT IS INTENTIONAL AND AGGRESSIVE IN CALLING EVERY LISTENER BOTH BELIEVERS AND UNBELIEVERS TO RESPOND POSITIVELY TO GOSPEL TRUTH.

  4. DECISIONAL PREACHING: WHY DO WE DO IT? 1. DECISIONAL PREACHING AND DECISIONAL REGENERATION ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

  5. JOHN 1:13 WHO WERE BORN, NOT OF THE WILL OF THE FLESH NOR OF THE WILL OF MAN, BUT OF GOD. JOHN 5:21 FOR AS THE FATHER RAISES THE DEAD AND GIVES THEM LIFE, SO ALSO THE SON GIVES LIFE TO WHOM HE WILL. JOHN 6:44 NO ONE CAN COME TO ME UNLESS THE FATHER WHO SENT ME DRAWS HIM. JOHN 15:16 YOU DID NOT CHOOSE ME, BUT I CHOSE YOU.

  6. EPHESIANS 2:1 AND YOU WERE DEAD IN THE TRESPASSES AND SINS. ROMANS 3:11 NO ONE UNDERSTANDS; NO ONE SEEKS FOR GOD. ROMANS 3:20 FOR BY WORKS OF THE LAW NO HUMAN BEING WILL BE JUSTIFIED IN HIS SIGHT, SINCE THROUGH THE LAW COMES KNOWLEDGE OF SIN. EPHESIANS 2:8-9 FOR BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED THROUGH FAITH. AND THIS IS NOT YOUR OWN DOING; IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD, NOT A RESULT OF WORKS, SO THAT NO ONE MAY BOAST.

  7. 2. THERES A MYSTERIOUS TENSION IN SCRIPTURE BETWEEN DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY AND HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY.

  8. I NEVER HAVE TO RECONCILE FRIENDS. DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY AND HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY HAVE NEVER HAD A FALLING OUT WITH EACH OTHER. I DO NOT NEED TO RECONCILE WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER WHERE THESE TWO TRUTHS MEET I DO NOT KNOW, NOR DO I WANT TO KNOW. THEY DO NOT PUZZLE ME, SINCE I HAVE GIVEN UP MY MIND TO BELIEVING THEM BOTH .THERE IS NO NEED TO RECONCILE THEM, FOR THEY HAVE NEVER YET QUARRELED WITH ONE ANOTHER. CHARLES SPURGEON

  9. SOME OF MY BRETHREN ARE GREATLY SCANDALIZED BY THE GENERAL INVITATIONS WHICH I AM IN THE HABIT OF GIVING TO SINNERS, AS SINNERS. SOME OF THEM GO THE LENGTH OF ASSERTING THAT THERE ARE NO UNIVERSAL INVITATIONS IN THE WORD OF GOD. CHARLES SPURGEON I KNOW THE LORD HAS BLESSED MY APPEALS TO ALL SORTS OF SINNERS AND NONE SHALL STOP ME IN GIVING FREE INVITATIONS AS LONG AS I FIND THEM IN THIS BOOK. AND I DO CRY WITH PETER THIS MORNING TO THIS VAST ASSEMBLY, REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED, EVERY ONE OF YOU, IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. FOR THE PROMISE IS UNTO YOU AND TO YOUR CHILDREN, EVEN TO AS MANY AS THE LORD OUR GOD SHALL CALL. CHARLES SPURGEON I FURTHER BELIEVE, ALTHOUGH CERTAIN PERSONS DENY IT, THAT THE INFLUENCE OF FEAR IS TO BE EXERCISED OVER THE MINDS OF MEN, AND THAT IT OUGHT TO OPERATE UPON THE MIND OF THE PREACHER HIMSELF. CHARLES SPURGEON

  10. 3. SCRIPTURE COMPELS US TO COMPEL OTHERS TO SAY YES TO THE GOSPEL.

  11. MATTHEW 11:28-30 COME TO ME, ALL WHO LABOR AND ARE HEAVY LADEN, AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST. TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU, AND LEARN FROM ME, FOR I AM GENTLE AND LOWLY IN HEART, AND YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. FOR MY YOKE IS EASY AND MY BURDEN IS LIGHT. JOHN 7:37 ON THE LAST DAY OF THE FEAST, THE GREAT DAY, JESUS STOOD UP AND CRIED OUT, IF ANYONE THIRSTS, LET HIM COME TO ME AND DRINK. LUKE 14:23 AND THE MASTER SAID TO THE SERVANT, GO OUT TO THE HIGHWAYS AND HEDGES AND COMPEL PEOPLE TO COME IN, THAT MY HOUSE MAY BE FILLED. REVELATION 22:17 THE SPIRIT AND THE BRIDE SAY, COME. AND LET THE ONE WHO HEARS SAY, COME. AND LET THE ONE WHO IS THIRSTY COME; LET THE ONE WHO DESIRES TAKE THE WATER OF LIFE WITHOUT PRICE. ACTS 17:2 AND PAUL WENT IN, AS WAS HIS CUSTOM, AND ON THREE SABBATH DAYS HE REASONED WITH THEM FROM THE SCRIPTURES.

  12. ACTS 17:17 SO HE REASONED IN THE SYNAGOGUE WITH THE JEWS AND THE DEVOUT PERSONS, AND IN THE MARKETPLACE EVERYDAY WITH THOSE WHO HAPPENED TO BE THERE. ACTS 18:4 AND HE REASONED IN THE SYNAGOGUE EVERY SABBATH, AND TRIED TO PERSUADE JEWS AND GREEKS. ACTS 18:19 AND THEY CAME TO EPHESUS, AND HE LEFT THEM THERE, BUT HE HIMSELF WENT INTO THE SYNAGOGUE AND REASONED WITH THE JEWS. ACTS 19:8-9 AND HE ENTERED THE SYNAGOGUE AND FOR THREE MONTHS SPOKE BOLDLY, REASONING AND PERSUADING THEM ABOUT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. BUT WHEN SOME OF BECAME STUBBORN AND CONTINUED IN UNBELIEF, SPEAKING EVIL OF THE WAY BEFORE THE CONGREGATION, HE WITHDREW FROM THEM AND TOOK THE DISCIPLES WITH HIM, REASONING DAILY IN THE HALL OF TYRANNUS. ACTS 24:25 AND AS HE REASONED ABOUT RIGHTEOUSNESS AND SELF-CONTROL AND THE COMING JUDGMENT, FELIX WAS ALARMED AND SAID, GO AWAY FOR THE PRESENT. WHEN I GET AN OPPORTUNITY I WILL SUMMON YOU.

  13. ACTS 26:28-29 AND AGRIPPA SAID TO PAUL, IN A SHORT TIME WOULD YOU PERSUADE ME TO BE A CHRISTIAN? AND PAUL SAID, WHETHER SHORT OR LONG, I WOULD TO GOD THAT NOT ONLY YOU BUT ALSO ALL WHO HEAR ME THIS DAY MIGHT BECOME SUCH AS I AM EXCEPT FOR THESE CHAINS. ACTS 28:23 WHEN THEY HAD APPOINTED A DAY FOR HIM, THEY CAME TO HIM AT HIS LODGING IN GREATER NUMBERS. FROM MORNING TILL EVENING HE EXPOUNDED TO THEM, TESTIFYING TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND TRYING TO CONVINCE THEM ABOUT JESUS BOTH FROM THE LAW OF MOSES AND FROM THE PROPHETS. 2 CORINTHIANS 5:11 THEREFORE, KNOWING THE FEAR OF THE LORD, WE PERSUADE OTHERS. BUT WHAT WE ARE IS KNOWN TO GOD, AND I HOPE IT IS KNOWN ALSO TO YOUR CONSCIENCE. 2 CORINTHIANS 5:20 THEREFORE, WE ARE AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST, GOD MAKING HIS APPEAL THROUGH US. WE IMPLORE YOU ON BEHALF OF CHRIST, BE RECONCILED TO GOD. 1 TIMOTHY 4:13 UNTIL I COME, DEVOTE YOURSELF TO THE PUBLIC READING OF SCRIPTURE, TO EXHORTATION, TO TEACHING.

  14. 2 PETER 1:5-11 FOR THIS VERY REASON, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO SUPPLEMENT YOUR FAITH WITH VIRTUE, AND VIRTUE WITH KNOWLEDGE, 6AND KNOWLEDGE WITH SELF-CONTROL, AND SELF-CONTROL WITH STEADFASTNESS, AND STEADFASTNESS WITH GODLINESS, 7AND GODLINESS WITH BROTHERLY AFFECTION, AND BROTHERLY AFFECTION WITH LOVE. 8FOR IF THESE QUALITIES ARE YOURS AND ARE INCREASING, THEY KEEP YOU FROM BEING INEFFECTIVE OR UNFRUITFUL IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. 9FOR WHOEVER LACKS THESE QUALITIES IS SO NEARSIGHTED THAT HE IS BLIND, HAVING FORGOTTEN THAT HE WAS CLEANSED FROM HIS FORMER SINS. 10THEREFORE, BROTHERS, BE ALL THE MORE DILIGENT TO CONFIRM YOUR CALLING AND ELECTION, FOR IF YOU PRACTICE THESE QUALITIES YOU WILL NEVER FALL. 11FOR IN THIS WAY THERE WILL BE RICHLY PROVIDED FOR YOU AN ENTRANCE INTO THE ETERNAL KINGDOM OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST.
