2016 GREEN IDEA Contest

Dayton is buzzing with GREEN IDEAS We challenged the community to send us your ideas for projects to help the environment and create healthier and more sustainable communities. We received 43 ideas. Way to go Dayton region!

STANDOUT IDEAS

Solar Thermal Heating The K-12 Gallery is a non-profit visual arts center offering arts education programs for all ages. As this community space is being renovated there is an opportunity to install over 100 Solar panels the owner has access to. Tests completed by University of Dayton students show that the panels have an efficiency of 16 to 40% on partly cloudy days. Efficiency increases on sunnier days. This Green Idea puts an example of how we can use the energy around us to lower green house gas emissions in a community space by tapping into community resources. Michael Deis

BYO Bottle Many people carry reusable containers for water and other drinks, but it's not always easy to find a place to refill the bottle. With BYO Bottle, people would bring a clean, reusable and specific branded bottle for access to cold water at a minimum and get a discount on other drinks from participating local festivals, eateries, coffee shops, 5/3 Field for Dragons games, etc. Free drinks would help entice people to eat and drink local and reduce trash from single-use cans and bottles. Lending Library A community space to borrow a range of specialty tools and equipment and learn how to use them. Operating like a library, by the libraries, residents can borrow specialized tools and equipment and connect with neighbors at monthly community nights. Courses on how to use equipment and ideas for projects would help citizens save money and reduce their environmental footprint through reuse. MaryEllen Etienne

Zero-Waste Town Halls A Town Hall is an informal public meeting where attendees can present ideas, voice their opinions, ask questions of public figures. Zero Waste is a strategy to manage our natural resources and reduce our waste stream for a greener future. By combining citizen engagement with the opportunity to convey and collect community-based zero waste strategies, we hope to create an effective means of creating a sustainable materials management plan for our communities. Workplace Food Communities When your workplace has employees with green thumbs, people who raise chickens, or simply those with abundant access to local foods, then a workplace food community could be generated. An easy-to-follow, easy-to-initiate program for workplaces to set up community food sharing, bartering, or purchasing to inspire a whole new generation of locavores buying and dining both healthy and local. Dont Suck! Plastic drinking straws are one of the most unnecessary single use dining tools that often pollutes our waterways and causes detriment to wildlife. This Green Idea proposes for one day, or even one week, restaurants will be encouraged to only offer straws at the specific request of the customer and not automatically hand them out. Table tents and at-seat literature will provide information and stats.
