This EU-funded project, CROSSBOW, addresses industrial challenges and standards needs for managing variable renewable energies and storage units. It focuses on system integration with smart transmission grids and storage technologies to increase renewables' share. The project tackles four major innovation challenges related to power transmission technologies, large-scale storage, communication technologies, and wholesale market approaches. Various technological solutions have been developed and packaged as eight software platform products with a regional implementation approach and pilot testing in eight European countries.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION TOPICS CROSSBOW products addresses the topic: LCE-04- 2017 (Low Carbon Emissions): Demonstration of system integration with smart transmission grid and storage technologies with increasing share of renewable. Within the above-mentioned topic four Innovation Challenges (IC) are addressed.

  5. INNOVATION CHALLENGES ADDRESSED 1. LCE04-a: Power transmission technologies and management of large-scale generation in the context of a significantly increased share of variable renewables and interactions with the distribution grid. 2. LCE04-b: Large scale storage relevant to the transmission network (up to GWh scale), potentially including several storage technologies addressing different time scale (e.g., daily, seasonal), ramping rates and volumes, managed centrally or in a distributed way. 3. LCE04-c: Communication/ICT technologies/control tools to enhance real -time awareness, to introduce more flexibility in the transmission grid, to integrate storage facilities, more flexible generation, demand- response mechanism and its interface with the distribution grid; solutions to enhance cross -border collaboration. 4. LCE04-d: New approaches to the wholesale market facilitating the participation of variable renewable energy sources, remunerating adequately new flexibility services to the grid such as offered by storage, active participation of demand and new players such as aggregators and reducing the cost of operations.

  6. CROSSBOW PRODUCTS/RESULTS 1. The project technological solutions have been packaged in the form of eight different products / results. 2. All products / results are of software platforms type. 3. All products / results are implementing a regional approach. 4. The testing and demonstration process included pilots in eight European countries. 5. The countries participating in CROSSBOW, have been grouped into clusters according to their main area of interest. 6. The demonstrations have been conducted following nine common high level use cases.

POTENTIAL IMPACT ON STANDARDIZATION The economic areas where the CROSSBOW products may have a significant impact on the standardization are the following: Cyber security Type and quality of services provided / included in the software Internal structure of the software (modularity rules) Transmission of data and information

TECHNICAL COMMITTEES POTENTIALLY IMPACTED According to the screening performed by CROSSBOW Team, the technical committees potentially impacted are the following: TC8 Systems aspects for electrical energy supply TC13 Electrical energy measurement and control TC 21 Secondary cells and batteries TC57 Power systems management and associated information exchange TC85 Measuring equipment for electrical and electromagnetic quantities TC120 Electrical Energy Storage (EES) System
