Teacher slide Objectives: To understand the pathways you can take after leaving school and how to make well-informed decisions You need: Post-it notes University vs Apprenticeships Article resources Pro and con wall headings on each wall put a University pro sign and a University con sign. Repeat for apprenticeships. Highlighter pens The recommended time for this resource is 45 minutes

  2. The Big Debate: Apprenticeships vs University

  3. Starter for 10 What do you know already about going to university or doing an apprenticeship? Write down three things you know about each of them. Include: One good thing, one bad thing, and one other thing

  4. Planning future pathways Planning what you want to do in the future can be daunting. Where do you begin? Academic study (staying at sixth form or going to college) Vocational training (doing an apprenticeship) The challenge is to find out which option would be best for you!

  5. Apprenticeships how can they benefit you?

  6. University how do degrees link to careers?

  7. How they measure up Apprenticeships and university degrees both offer a wide range of opportunities to students leaving school. But which could be better for you? The following challenge will get you thinking about the pros and cons of each, helping you to work out which could be the best fit.

  8. Challenge 1 In your groups, have a look at the articles on your tables covering university and apprenticeship choices. After reading each one, discuss the pros and cons that you have taken from those article for choosing an apprenticeship or university. As a group, use a highlighter pen to mark out three main points from each article.

  9. Challenge Take four post-it notes. On one note write a advantage of university and on the other write a disadvantage. Repeat for apprenticeships so your team has one pro and one con for for each:

  10. Challenge It s time to get moving! One person from each group should stick the post-it notes under the headings on the wall. What points did you come up with?

  11. What do you think? Have a look at some of the post-it notes that your peers have stuck on the walls. What do you think about them? Do they match or differ to yours? Think about the following: - Did your research help you to understand which pathway might be best for you? - Why is it important to research pathways before choosing our future destinations?

  12. To finish the session Consider: - At the start of the session, did you want to go to university or do an apprenticeship? Why? - Do you still think the same? Why/why not?
