  1. WANIC/SATELLITE PROGRAM INFORMATION 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

  2. WANIC classes are offered to students in the school districts in Northeast King County (including NSD) no transportation Satellite Classes are under the WANIC umbrella but are classes offered ONLY at BHS/WHS/IHS/NCHS limited transportation provided WANIC OR SATELLITE?

Expands educational and career options All classes meet the 1.0 CTE credit graduation requirement but several classes also satisfy other HS graduation requirements College credits offered You can go to work, college or both with prep from these classes Gain access to up-to-date future oriented training Practical application of knowledge in real-world settings Allows you to determine whether or not a career option is for you Industry certification earned in several classes WHY CHOOSE WANIC/SATELLITE?

  4. Pick up a yellow Career and College Readiness Satellite Application in the Counseling Office. Fill out application completely, including the transportation form (only for classes at IHS, WHS, NCHS), pick up an attendance profile from attendance office and turn in everything to the box outside Mr. Dawson s office by April 3, 2019. Apply for the class you want and we ll worry about bell schedule conflicts later. When completing your course selection form for your BHS classes next year, please indicate what Satellite class you are applying to on the form. Fill out the correct number of boxes on the form for a full schedule (including Satellite class boxes). Then use the Satellite Class code from the selection form when completing your online registration for your BHS classes. You will be notified by district letter later in spring if you are accepted. HOW TO APPLY TO SATELLITE (NSD) PROGRAMS?

  5. Go to WANIC.org, complete the application online for the class you want (and time). List accurate email address that you will check regularly. Attend a site visit/information session if applying to DigiPen. Go HERE to RSVP. Contact teacher or Career Counselor if having trouble attending site visit/information session at DigiPen. You will be notified via email from WANIC if accepted. When filling out your course selection form for your BHS classes, you will also indicate that you are applying to a WANIC class on your form. Fill out the correct number of boxes (6 boxes for a 3 credit WANIC class, 4 boxes for 2 credit WANIC class) on form for a full schedule. Use the WANIC class code listed on the form when completing your online registration for BHS classes. YOU ONLY NEED TO APPLY AT WANIC.org IF THE CLASS ISN T OFFERED BY A NORTHSHORE SCHOOL DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. HOW TO APPLY TO A WANIC CLASS?

  6. Auto Technology: Morning or Afternoon Can be up to a 3 year course of study. 3 credits per year. Sophomores and 1styear Auto Shop juniors take the PM class (3 credits). 2ndyear juniors and all seniors take the AM class(3 credits) The AM class also offers English 11 or 12 (1.0) credit and Lab Science/3rdCredit of Science credit (1.0) The PM class offers Lab Science/3rdCredit of Science credit (1.0) Up to 26 college credits available if a B or better is earned Paid internships available, scholarships available Preference for Post Secondary programs Multiple ASE Industry Certifications available Composites Engineering 1 credit course. Up to 5 college credits available. This is a 2 period, 1 semester long course Build cool projects on state of the art equipment (3D printer/Scanner/C & C Router) Great option for students pursuing 4-year Engineering or Materials Science degrees BHS SATELLITE CLASSES

Culinary Arts 2 credit course, up to 9 college credits available Also available to sophomores Learn hands on industry experience in food prep, food costing, marketing, catering and customer relations Also counts for a Lab Science/3rdCredit of Science, if needed Learn knife skills cooking techniques, appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, eggs and breakfast, baking, plating, etc. Do culinary projects for school and district events Earn Industry Certification if you complete 2 years Work with industry professionals and take fun field trips to restaurants BHS SATELLITE CLASSES CONT D

  8. Baking and Pastry 2 credit course, College Credit pending Also offers Lab Science/3rdCredit of Science, if needed Become eligible for scholarships Learn various baking techniques Learn how to make quick breads, decorated cakes, laminated dough, mousses, sauces, custards & frozen desserts, cookies and confections. Learn decorating techniques like sugar and chocolate garnishing. BHS SATELLITE CLASSES CONT D

Sports Medicine (beginning and advanced) 1 credit class (per year), beginning and advanced, up to 25 college credits available if both years taken Connect to different careers in sports medicine and athletic training Classroom and internship components Work with the BHS sports team as assistant athletic trainers BHS SATELLITE CLASSES CONT D

  10. Teaching Academy 2 credit course, up to 5 college credits Offers the Total Teaching Experience. Gain experience and training involved in becoming a teacher Participate in the inner workings of the classroom, school and district through interviews, shadowing, and interning. Intern with a mentor teacher at an elementary school Students will also earn the state STARS certification required to work in licensed childcare centers. BHS SATELLITE CLASSES CONT D

  11. IB Design and Technology SL/HL Typically taken as a 2 credit class for BHS students, up to 5 college credits available Recommended to be seniors only but also available to juniors Project-based course Through a series of college-level projects (product design, building design/urban planning, and graphic design), individual portfolios will be developed for college applications. Exploration of the process and tools used in industrial (products) design including an in-depth look at human factors and ergonomics, CAD/CAM, material science and sustainable design. Work with industry partners to apply concepts Learn basics of material selection, manufacturing processes and techniques, production systems, clean technology, and green design.   12. Health Science Careers (a.k.a. Medical Professionals Academy) 3 credit class, up to 24 college credits available Offers Lab Science/3rdcredit of science (1.0) and Health credit (.50), if needed Opportunity to become Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) by the end of the year 100% employment rate as CNA s upon graduation, if that route is taken by student. Health care field exploration Anatomy and physiology, Medical terminology Infection control, patient care Preventative and restorative care Electronic charting Clinical internship/shadowing at Harborview Medical Center at the end of year. CPR & First Aid certification HIV Certification WHS SATELLITE CLASSES

  13. Welding and fabrication 1 credit course, 2 periods, up to 7 college credits available Training in oxy-acetylene welding and cutting, arc welding, MIG welding, and TIG welding. Planning and layout work Shielded metal arc as well as MIG solid wire, flux core, and TIG welding in all positions. Work with Carbon steel, aluminum, and stainless steel WHS SATELLITE CLASSES CONT D

  14. Aviation: Introduction to Flight 1 credit course Exploratory course into the aviation careers. Learn the principles of flight, aircraft and aircraft systems, flight environment, meteorology, radio communications, flight planning, aircraft performance, navigation and more. The curriculum used in this course will prepare any student to take the FAA private pilot written exam. NCHS SATELLITE CLASS

Satellite classes (classes taught at BHS, IHS, WHS, NCHS) require yellow Career and College Readiness Application available in the BHS Counseling Office Due April 3, 2019 WANIC classes (classes taught outside our school district) require application to be filled out at WANIC.org and a site visit for DigiPen classes.
