  4. PROJECT OVERVIEW - PURPOSE Main Remade is a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet project designed to enhance safety and accessibility for all road users along one of downtown Louisville's key business, residential and tourism corridors Main Street.

PROJECT OVERVIEW PHASE I FOCUS More location details: 10 blocks of Main St. from Wenzel St. to 2nd St. Two blocks of Market St. The westbound travel lane that currently ends at Brook St. will continue to 2nd St. to complete the two-way connectivity of Main St. and Market St. from 2nd St. to Baxter Ave.

  11. NEED - SAFETY One-way urban street: prioritizes moving as much traffic as possible as quickly as possible 464 total crashes, 89 injury, 1 fatality 47% side-swipe crashes 27% t-bone crashes 88% of pedestrian crashes resulted in injury

  12. NEED ACCESSIBILITY Current corridor design: Prioritizes motorists, not all road users Limits accessibility Inefficient circulation

PROJECT IMPROVEMENTS Main Remade will help reduce the risk of severe crashes by prioritizing safety through: Converting the current one-way street into a two-way street Upgrading crosswalks and intersection corners Creating a protected bike lane (cycle track) Adding dedicated left-turn lanes at intersections Upgrading traffic signals

TWO-WAY STREET CONVERSIONS SAFETY Two-way streets discourage high vehicle speeds Lower speed helps reduce the severity of crashes with other roadway users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists ACCESSIBILITY Two-way streets offer more direct routes to destinations, are easier to navigate, and help increase foot traffic Improves visibility and ease of access to businesses and other destinations along the roadway

  16. PROTECTED BIKE LANES A protected bike lane (cycle track) is roadway space designated for bicycles and scooters that is separated from driving lanes, parking lanes, and sidewalks. A protected westbound bike lane is planned for entire East Phase corridor. Will be separated from driving lanes by street parking and a raised buffer. Connectivity with planned eastbound Market Street bike lane.

  17. PROTECTED BIKE LANES SAFETY Many serious bicycle crashes occur at non-intersections, most often when motorists overtake cyclists. Will reduce the risk of crashes by limiting the locations where bicyclists and motorists interact. ACCESSIBILITY Prioritizing all road users, improves downtown connectivity.

  18. CROSSWALKS AND INTERSECTION CORNERS Upgrading the striping and lighting of crosswalks is a significant component of this project and is expected to dramatically enhance pedestrian safety.

  19. PARKING The project will involve a reconfiguration of parking along the corridor. Parking availability is expected to remain sufficient. Commercial developments within Phase I are also expected to increase the parking capacity of the area.
