Quick guide for teaching staff: Supporting students academic skills transitions
What can teaching staff do to support students academic skills development? o Recognise that all students, UG & PG, will need ongoing support in developing their academic skills o Be aware that students understanding of academic skills/expectations will vary widely o Create learning environments in which all students feel able to ask questions without judgement: normalise academic skills development as a core part of learning
What can teaching staff do? o Explain and demonstrate your academic expectations on a regular basis o Work in partnership with students to identify what practical academic skills support works best for them o Create opportunities for peer-peer learning; encourage students to work together, where appropriate, drawing upon their diverse range of academic skills
What can teaching staff do? o Provide students with regular feedback on their work, to highlight progress and to clarify practical ways to developing their academic skills o Be approachable: students asking for help should be expected as a core part of their learning o Clarify your availability for meetings with students and how they can contact you, for example, email, Teams, Canvas, in-person meetings etc.
What can teaching staff do? o Regularly signpost university resources to support students transition to Oxford o Show students how to access a range of university-wide academic skills development opportunities o Share any additional departmental/college support for students to develop their subject-specific academic skills
Further teaching support and resources o Departments/colleges can apply for support from the Centre for Teaching and Learning through the new Integrating Academic Skills Consultancy Service o Staff can join the Academic Skills Special Interest Group o See the practical resources for teaching staff to support students transition to studying at Oxford
