Dental caries DESCRIPTION Bacterial decay of the enamel and dentine of the tooth CHANGES For analgesia during procedures: Lidocaine with epinephrine (adrenaline), injection & lidocaine, injection AMENDED - Prescribing by dental therapists allowed REASON HPCSA Regulations provide for prescribing and use of local anaesthesia by a dental therapists 3
Aphthous ulcers DESCRIPTION Painful ulcers in the mouth, except the gums, hard palate and dorsum of the tongue. CHANGES For mouth ulcers not healing: Referral criteria for Ulcers that are not healing within 10 days ADDED REASON Suggested to refer for appropriate diagnosis at higher level of care for possible malignancy. It is difficult to distinguish malignancies from ulcers. 4
