Nasmyth's Membrane is a residue found on newly erupted teeth, causing extrinsic staining. It can be treated with selective polishing and proper brushing. Dentigerous cysts, odontogenic cysts associated with developing teeth, may lead to dental issues. Treatment for cysts includes monitoring and, if necessary, surgery. Dental hygienists play a vital role in educating patients about these conditions and promoting proper oral hygiene practices.

  1. NASMYTHS MEMBRANE & DENTIGEROUSCYST Amanda Vera D219

  2. What is Nasmyths Membrane? Nasmyth s Membrane is a residue that may form on newly erupted teeth of both dentitions that can leave the teeth extrinsically stained. The green-gray residue Nasmyth Membrane consists of fused tissue of the reduced enamel epithelium and oral epithelium as well as the dental cuticle. The fused tissues is an extremely thin layer that covers the entire crown of the newly erupted teeth.

  3. What causes Nasmyths Membrane When children get their baby teeth, they are covered with Nasmyth Membrane. (Usually we do not notice it) Once children begin to chew, it eventually falls off. In some cases however the cuticle remains as the greenish gray stain and may make the teeth look discolored due to the remnants of the membrane that will pick up extrinsic stain from food debris. This happens for many reasons mainly the fact that children are not brushing their teeth significantly enough to make the membrane wear away.

  4. How can Nasymths Membrane be treated? Treatment for the removal of the discoloration is fairly simple. 1. Can be removed by selective polishing. 2. Teeth need to be brushed properly with adult supervision combined with normal chewing usually make the stain disappear.

  5. The role of the Dental Hygienist Explain to child s guardian what a Nasymth s membrane is. Explain proper tooth brushing Selective polishing performed by the dental hygienist

  6. What is a Dentigerous Cyst? A odontogenic cyst that forms from the reduced enamel epithelium after the crown has completely formed and matured. Usually associated with non erupted impacted or developing tooth of the permanent third molars.

  7. What causes Dentigerous cysts? A dentigerous cyst is formed by the hydrostatic force exerted by the accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of unerupted teeth, As such the cyst encloses the crown and is attached to the neck at the cementoenamel junction When cysts becomes larger within the bone of the jaws it may cause: 1. Displaced teeth 2. Jaw fracture 3. Pain

  8. Role as a Dental Hygienist Overlook radiographs with dentist Recommend to an Oral Surgeon. *Dentigerous Cyst must be completely removed surgically because it may become neoplastic otherwise.
