Personal Life-saving Appliances Lifebuoys Any of various kinds of buoyant device for keeping people afloat in an emergency. Every lifebuoy should be constructed of inherently buoyant material and be able to withstand a drop into the water from the height. Immersion suit or survival suit is a special type of waterproof dry suit that protects the wearer from hypothermia from immersion in cold water, after abandoning a sinking or capsized vessel, especially in the open ocean.
Lifejackets A sleeveless buoyant or inflatable jacket for keeping a person afloat in water. A lifejacket must have sufficient buoyance and stability in calm fresh water. Thermal protective aids A thermal protective aid is a bag or a suit made of waterproof material with low thermal conductivity. It is used to reduce the heat loss from the wearer s body.
Hand flares A hand flare is a small cylindrical stick which when activated, produces an intense red smoke or light without an explosion. Buoyant smoke signal Buoyant smoke is a daylight distress signal and can be used on ships, lifeboats and life rafts. ... It will immediately emit smoke to attract attention.
Survival crafts Survival craft is craft capable of sustaining the lives of people in distress from the time of abandoning the ship. They may be of two kinds: liferafts and lifeboats. Liferafts a type of boat that is carried on a large ship and is used in emergencies, for example when the ship is sinking, to take people to safety
Lifeboats Lifeboat is one of the most important life-saving equipment onboard a ship, which is used at the time of extreme emergencies for abandoning a ship. Lifeboat is a smaller rigid vessel, secured onboard into davits so that it can be launched over the side of the ship with least time and mechanical assistance possible for an early escape of the crew from the ship.
Rescue boats Rescue boat is a boat designed to rescue people in distress and to marshal survival craft. It is capable of carrying at least 5 seated persons and a person lying down. Rescue boats shall be capable maneuvering at speed of 6 knots for a period of at least 4h.
Other life-saving appliances Line throwing apparatus is used by ships crew to rescue a person at sea, to assist in salvage (recovery) operation of anything at sea, a ship or a boat. They should be able to throw a line with reasonable accuracy at least 230m in calm weather and include not less than 4 lines.
The general emergency signal is a signal used on board ships in times of emergency. The signal is composed of seven or more short blasts followed by one long blast on the ship's whistle and internal alarm system. It should be audible throughout the accommodation and normal crew working spaces.
